Today i started to publish my diary about my voyages in the world of Middle Earth (LOTRO).

Turbine created a huge world to travel in, and exactly the possibility to explore all the famous sites in the book, is a real thrill to do. Everyone knows probably the 'kick' of travelling and to discover sites which can enlighten yourself.

The game Lord of the Rings Online creates such a thrill, at least if you like PC games and exploring huge fantasy worlds. In this blog i will show you some interesting places i have visited, as a kind of real life diary.

As long as it is possible, i will also explore which are near impossible to reach. This is the most interesting part of LOTRO's huge world. So to be at places the developers never intend you to visit, or - maybe - just want you to visit, but its real hard to reach the desired place.

I hope you will enjoy my voyages.

Note.

For reasons of safety i will not show you the fine details to enter a place which is very hard to reach. I only show you my blog about it. And that it is really possible to stand on a high rock, ruin, cliff, waterfall - etcetera - you never dreamed of.

How I learned to fly in LOTRO's Middle Earth

$

Ever wondered why you can't fly a beast in LOTRO. Yes? Maybe the answer to this silly question is, that you never really tried it. So, if you think you cannot fly, you will surely never learn to fly!

LESSON 1 - THE BEGINNING

The first step to learn to fly is to watch out for every opportunity in the game to see yourself flying or to find strange floating objects. Of course its impossible to really fly in the game, but - at least - you can imagine it. And thats fine, since the whole game is designed for your own imagination.

Now and then you find yourself in a strange stance. Some really weird glitch can give you the imagination of floating. For example if you just left the stable for a fast trip from Michel Delving to Breetown.

Be very quick if you catch such a scene, and take a screenshot! *

So where to begin? First, start to monitor your environment very thoroughly. For example, when i travelled to Eregion - a lvl 50 region - a noticed a bush of blackberry floating in the air. Very curious indeed!

A stange floating bush of blackberries as noticed in southwestern Eregion. Is this a Middle Earth satellite point for blackberry owners? Who knows? Sadly i forgot my communication device, so i never found out. But search for them in Eregion, maybe you find these strange blackberries too!

*) a screenscot can be taken by pressing the Prt Scr (Print Screen) button. You will find your pictures in My Documents,in the Map: The Lord of the Rings Online.

LESSON 2 - HOVERING AROUND THE STABLE

The next step in your flying lessons is to hover in the sky, just imagine that your horse is gone. I experienced this at the stables near Michel Delving several times. Be quick and capture these strange scenes. You never know when it will occur again! It seems to occur always when you are travelling by horse. So the secret to learn to fly is: get a horse and watch out!

Wow i can fly at Michel Delving!

I never believed in flying in LOTRO, but it occured to me in Nan Amlug West too! Thrilling!

LESSON 3 - THE FINAL STEP

So after reading all this stuff, you thought i was boosting about some strange glitches? Who knows, but if you get a grip of this, you will finally find yourself high in the air. Like the horse of Sleipnir from the Old Norse Gods. Of course Lotro designed you to learn this, its a game about imagination. And at some weird places you can fly, free as an angel, like the gods of old time! Try it yourself! Start to be a believer!

Flying? Yes you can!

Higher and higher, Up you Go!

An excursion to the waterfall of Woodhall

Do you remember the early times before you reached the magical level 20 ceiling?
Maybe you have visited the Marish or Woodhall in the Shire.

Today i decided to go back to my early days and to enjoy the Shire again. Its a cosy place, even for high level players. There are many small waterfalls, and one I remembered pretty good.

Just south of Woodhall, in Green Hill Country,  is a pretty high and scenic waterfall. Its to the west of a place full of huge brown bears. Yes, I think you will remember it now! Its the dangerous bear den, west of a hideout with lots of very nasty villains.

In a field of flowers i watched the high waterfall south of Woodhall in the Shire. And I started to dream. To the right you can see a grassfield and a single birch. Would it be possible to reach that place and climb the steep rocks? And after that, to take an excursion to that impressing high waterfall?

I tried many days to find a good spot to climb. I found a huge bear den, would that be the right place to climb higher into the mountains?

A gloomy bear den, somewhere southwest of Woodhall and at the end of Narrowcleeve, a notorious Thieves Hideout.

Near the waterfall there is a bear den with some round boulders to climb. If you manage to climb upon the rocky ridge, you will have a beautiful view above the bear den. Glad these brown monsterous bears didn't noticed me, although they seemed pretty docile! Maybe they are highly sought by hobbits for their fairs near Bilbo's Hill? Dancing bears are such a delight to see, especially when they try to eat a hobbit...

If you climb somewhat higher you can see another waterfall, right near the road to the Marish and Breeland. These hights are pretty scare, so don't get vertigo. Otherwise you will find yourself lying in the river beneath this granite rocks. Incapacitated of course!

The waterfall is a real marvel and you can see its foam from a great distance. Its like an eternal fog cloud, just above the rocks. Beneath you see the river which floats to the Marish. The sound of all that water is spectacular!

I managed to climb near the waterfall and i noticed a strange curve at the origin of the waterfall. You can see it just to the lower right corner. Strange, I cannot explain that curve by gravity alone. Would it be that beneath the curve lives a benign being? Who knows...

Peeking behind the gate of Michel Delving

To the east and west of Michel Delving there are two gates. When I started to play LOTRO I always wondered what kind of strange lands were behind these gates. I never found out, alas. Even 5 years later, these gates are still closed.

According to Sweet Cherry, you can find in those lands a secret and abandoned Hobbit Village. I show you a picture from Cherry.
For details, see: http://living-the-legends.blogspot.nl/2009/04/hidden-hobbit-village.html

A hidden hobbit village in the south of the Shire, south of Michel Delving.

Recently there was a rumour that the village was now inaccesable. Well, was that really true?
I travelled to Michel Delving and found the gate to the secret village, as described by Cherry.

Here I stand wondering if I could still go beyond this gate. If you go near the gate you will notice two huge trees and a road going to the gate..

Behind the hedge you see a tree and a rocky wall.

If you stand to the right, you see a road, going south.
I peeked at the door and I noticed a tiny slit of light. Eventually I managed to slip through the door and emerged as by magic on the other side. I saw the road going south and the tree I described above. I was thrilled! Could I go by horse to the secret village, finally? Was it still there, or was it vanished?

Behind thehedgegate at Michel Delving....Finally.

In the distance you can notice the trees of Michal Delving, behind the hedge and the wooden gate.

Behind the gate, and to the south. Go, go, go!

Alas.... my friends. There was an invisible wall at the road. I couldnt go past, so my voyage ended here, just 100 meters behind the gate (sob) ....

I managed to climb the rock and what I found there, I will show you now.

Behind Michel Delving there is a vast grassy landscape with some mountains at the horizon. There are many birch trees, indicating non fertilized ground and a poor soil. Maybe some Hobbits ventured in these grasslands with their sheepflocks. At least it seems deserted now.

I also noticed a strange unnamed river in a green valley. All what you see is heavely shield walled. You cannot go further, because of an invisible wall. Well, maybe at another time, with another expansion, we may go to this place. My conclusion - for now - is that the Secret Hobbit Village cannot be reached anymore.

The dangers of off-map travelling in LOTRO

Unfortunately, but understandable, all the off-map lands in LOTRO are nowadays heavely shieldwalled.
Why? Because the developers discouraged it because you can push your character of the map.
At the outer limits you can go into “nirvana”, where the GM tools cannot recover you from it anymore. Brrrrr. I left here as soon as possible.

The Hobbitvillage in Breetown

Although not very big, Breetown is the biggest settlement in Lotro's Middle Earth. And you can be there at a very low level. Breetown is perfectly safe, you can't get molested by bears, wolves or other nasty creatures.

Hobbits in Breetown

As you enter the town from the westside, at the road to the Shire, you probably have noticed some hobbit houses within the city. You find them on a hill between the westgate and the northgate. I was always very curious about hobbits living in Breetown, so today i decided to pay them a visit.

The excursion of today goes to the grassy field and the remote hobbit houses marked with the red arrows,

Unfortunately the houses of the most secluded hobbits who live in Bree, are hard to visit. If you have a standard horse you may try a house. Jump on a house and try to enter the grassy plateau with some nice and cosy hobbit houses. But I have a problem. I can't jump very well with my horse. At least not on houses. I tried it a lot, but I didn't get on the roof. But, honestly, I have seen people doing this and they succeeded.

I am just a horsegirl who loves racing with a horse. Some are very fast and can jump high and long distances. These kind of horses are prefectly for visiting the hobbit houses in Bree. And behold, you can climb a certain rocky wall with a fast horse. But, you must be at least lvl 75 to learn it. Lower levels have to use the repetitive roofjumping method, which I hate to do.

The remote hobbit houses in Breetown seemed to be occupied, since there is a well used tiny path going from house to house. Curiously, the houses are nearly inaccessable, so these hobbits surely don't want to be seen, or visited. But if you try hard, you will find them, eventually.

These hobbit houses, with their typical grassy roofs, have a great view. In fact, from this spot you may see one of the most stunning views of Breetown.

The hobbits who are living in the upper houses in Bree, are the most lucky ones in Breetown. Watch the view, how spectacular!

The houses were build upon a big and flat grassy plateau. Here the eastern site, whre you can see the village square and the famous fountain.

Despite there was light in the windows, i couldn't find any hobbit to talk to. The doors were closed and the inhabitants seem te be very shy.

The Combe Gate from above. Isn't it a beauty?

A lovely view of Combe

This must by Ellie Cutleaf's house, isn't it?

Or this? Well its for you to find out. Anyway, its late and time to go. I feel hungry and wanna eat something. In the Prancing Pony of course.

Afterword
I recently returned to the secluded hobbithouses, high above Bree. To pay them a visit and drink a cup of tea. To my utter astonishment they were gone. There was simply no sign of any hobbithouse high on the hill. Like they never where here, on the spot I visited. Curiously there was one old elven-ruin now on the place where the hobbit-houses once stood. Maybe the Bree-town folk have rebuild something on all these vacant spots. Without the hobbit houses it is a boring place now. The only thing I can say about it, is that the place can be easily reached these days. But the hobbits are gone, and with them the small wonder in Bree-town. Maybe they where afraid about all these new visitors peeking through their windows.

6 February 2013 - The hobbit-houses uphill are all gone, replaces by a kitsch elven ruin.

A curious case of Borg in the Shire

Today something curious happened. On my voyages in the Shire I discovered a strange green landscape. Although the Shire should be green, this particular spot was a mesmerising shade of green.

I decided to investigate the spot more thoroughly. It was a very curious place. No birds singing, no animals wandering around. Even no brown bears or goblins, creatures you find a lot in this particular spot.

The investigation took some hours and before I knew it, the sky was dark.

Thousands of stars twinkled in the sky. I started to daydream a bit. A vast place, the sky and the heavens. Who will live near these stars I wondered. Then I did a shocking discovery....

Near the root of a curious green valley I found a strange square hill. At first a couldn't believe my eyes. After some moments I decided to investigate this weird green enigma.

When a came to the foot of this strange hill, it was square indeed. Something was nagging my memory. A big square... Maybe a....

No that can't be possible in Middele Earth... A cube???

The Cube - awesome

Well it definitely was a cube. A huge one! When I came near, something terrible happened. I got nauseous and dizzy. Immediately I was forced to my knees. The world changed to a dull grey.

After some moments I heard a strange voice in my head:

"We are the Borg...."

"We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own...."

"Resistance is futile....."

NOOoooo!!! That cannot be true! Or ... can it?

Constellations in Lotro

$

The nights in Lotro's Middle Earth are wonderful. Sometimes thousands of stars can be seenduring a crisp and cloudless sky. Have you ever stand still a moment and behold the splendor of the Heavens?

I did, and when you look carefully you can find a white face and three distinct starpatterns in the sky, which have a special meaning in the world of Middle Earth.

Ithil or Isil, the Moon

The most striking light in the night is Ithil, or Isil, the Moon. In the human world she is seen as a lady, and if you look carefully you can see her face.

The Moon could be a lady or a flowerlamp, carried by Tilion

The Elves, however, have a totally different story about the moon. According to the old verses the moon was created by Aulë, a Valar (Valars are a kind of Power, like a deity).
Aulë and his people made a vessel, to hold the radiance of the last flower of Telperion, the elder of the Two Trees of Valinor (a place where the Valar lived). Tilion, a Maia (Maias are spirits who help the Valars), was chosen to guide the vessel of the Moon at here path between the stars.
The Elves called the moon Isil, and later Ithil. A poetic name for the Moon was The Silver Flower and Gollem called the moon just The White Face.

The Moon was valued as higher than the Sun by the Elves, because it came from the Elder Tree and because it rose first in the sky. The moon was made in memory of the Elves. The Sun on the other hand was made in memory of Men.

Menelmacar - The Swordsman of the Sky

Menelmacar is Quenyan for the 'swordsman of the sky' or 'swordsman of the heavens'. Its one of the star constellations in the heavens of Middle Earth. On a clear night you can see it low in the horizon, with three stars in the middle and four bright ones around it.

Menelmacar, the Swordsman of the Sky (to the left)

Menelmacar was created by Varda, just before the Awakening of the Elves, as a symbol of light and hope. It also forebodes the Last Battle prophesized at the End of Days. In the human world its most likely the constellation of Orion. If you take a moment you can see three stars close togehter, which is the belt of the swordsman. That belt is also know as a seperate constellation in Middle Earth, called Eksiqilta or Ektaqilta.

Orion the Giant Hunter

Orion was a huge hunter, with a belt with a sword. The three stars together, also called the three kings, are his belt. In his right hand Orion has a club to strike foes. In his left hand he has a curious shield made of a very tough hide of a giant lion.

Valacirca - The Sickle of the Valar

Valacirca, which is Quenyan for 'Sickle of the Valar' is another very famous star constellation in the heavens of Middle Earth. It was created by Varda just before the Awakening of the Elves as a warning to Melkor of his eventual downfall.

Valacirca, just above my head!

Valacirca was also known as the Seven Stars, the Sickle and the Wain by the Hobbits. The Dwarves called it Durin’s Crown. These seven stars formed the symbol of Durin, seen on the doors of Moria. It inspired also a song of defiance from Beren. According to the Silmarillion, it was set in the Northern Sky as a sign of doom for Melkor and a sign of hope for the Elves. The Valacirca is one of the few constellations named in the book, another significant one being Menelvagor.

According to Man, the constellation is comparable to a section of Ursa Major (the Great Bear), also known as the Big Dipper.

According to man, Valacirca is Ursa Major

Remmirath - the Netted Stars

Remmirath, the netted stars, is a very fine cluster of stars, close together. It can be found above and to the right of Menelmacar, the Swordsman in the Sky.

Remmirath, the Netted Stars, right above my head.

According to Man this dazzling tiny star cluster is called the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. Each star is a Sister and has a name. There names are Maia, Electra, Alcyone, Taygete, Asterope, Celaeno and Merope.
Six sisters are very easy to find in the sky, especially during a crisp and clear winter night. The seventh sister, Merope, is a pain for the naked eye. According to legend this sister is so shy, that she always tries to hide from your eyes.

Man called Remmirath the Seven Sisters, or the Pleiades

This is their story.
On an unlucky day, the seven sisters met the great hunter Orion, just by chance. The hunter fell in love with all of them and the Pleiades became the object of his pursuit. He pursued them all over the face of the Earth and the girls couldn’t get rid of this horny hunter. The sisters called for Zeus, ruler of all Gods. Zeus changed them into a flock of doves, which he set in the heavens. The sisters where shocked by the pursuit of Orion and cried a lot. When you see them low in the fall sky, the rainy season will start in the Northern Hemisphere.
Another story tells us that once seven maidens camped near the river in a region known to have many bears. One of the bears began to chase the maidens, and they knelt to pray for help, calling upon the gods. The ground was raised into the sky and to protect the maidens from the chasing bear, a Great Spirit placed them in the sky as the seven sisters, the Pleiades. The Japanese called these sisters Subaru and you can find them on vehicles with the same name.

Iceberg Ahead

Forochel is a wonderful place. Some people don't like it there, but as a seasonal visitor of the high north I really appreciate Forochel a lot. The fantastic white landscape, crisp skies and a frozen nose. The occasional trumpet of a mammoth and the Aurora Borealis are the most exotic things to experience there.

Northern lights or Aurora Borealis in Forochel

In Suri-Kyla there is a curious black and triangular shaped iceberg. If you ever wanna explore that thing, I can say that nothing is impossible. If you are level 70 or 75 swimming to that iceberg is easy. If you are of a lower level you need some food for continous morale regeneration.

The black triangular iceberg at Suri-Kyla

The first thing you have to do is to swim to the nearest flat ice-shelve. After that you have to wait to regenerate your morale and then take the swim to the black triangular. Don't be too eager, since at a certain line there is a deadly invisible wall. If you pass that line, you will be killed instantly, alas. So, I have to do that swimming trip all over again and again. Unfortunately the whole ice-sea at Forochel is guarded by a deadly invisible wall. But some iceberg and ice-shelves can be reached. Have fun to find out.

Reaching the first ice-shelve, black iceberg ahead!

Entering the ice-shelve of the black iceberg

Another funny trip, is a ride to Kuru-Leiri. If you follow the seashore to the east, or rather the icy perimeter, you will find a nice white ice-bridge. That bridge is more beautiful than the ice-bridge at Suri-Kyla, and its worth a trip to visit it

The white ice-bridge at Kuru-Leiri

Just before the ice-bridge there are two white pointed icebergs. Its very easy to swim to these icebergs and you can even climb to the summits of them. Have a friend with you to take some pictures, since it is a awesome sight to see a tiny adventurer on a huge iceberg. And if you swim through the deadly cold water, don't forget to look down at the base of an iceberg. Its really true that you can see only 1/10th of them above the surface!

Climbing an iceberg with Raynah. If you look carefully, you can see me on the right one!

Both icebergs near the ice-bridge can be climbed. Do you see me?

To the Waterfall of Bindbole

In the north of the Shire there are two great waterfalls, right after each other. This lovely landscape is worth to investigate and a trip to the highest waterfall is a real adventure!

Today i was accompanied by a you traveller, called Ulis, and we gathered near the ruin of Bindbole.

The ruin of Bindbole
The ruin of Bindbole is easy accessible and if you go from that point to the east, you will encounter after some minutes a lovely stream with two waterfalls.

At the foot of the waterfall of Bindbole

Somewhere at the waterfall of Bindbole you can climb the rocks and you will end up above the waterfall. First we decided to go west, just to view our starting point at the ruin of Bindbole Wood. Its a beautiful place and from a distance it looks like an old temple from the past. Its sad to see such a splendid building of the past in total ruin. But alas, time flies, they say... And that time kills everything in the end, is clearly visible at the Bindbole ruin.

Bindbole ruin from a distance

If you are fond of ruins you can even travel some miles to west and - west of Bindbole Ruins - you will encounter a much smaller ruin, sitting on the edge of a rock-wall. Only daredevil's can reach that tiny ruin, and it is a hazardous climb to reach that high and desolate spot. Its a round stone circle, with three broken pillars, and you can find it near a spider invested grove called Lobs' Grove. I never found any spiders there, but the sight above Lobs Grove looks awfully sticky!

The ruin near Lobs Grove, west of the Bindbole forest ruin

Ah well, time to go east again. Let's not be distracted by some old stone circle near the spider's grove, let's go to Bindbole's waterfall!

First you have to cross the river and climb the wall, as seen in this picture here. After that you can climb the whole perimeter encircling Bindbole forest, Goblins Grove and even  a peek at Brockenborings in the Greenfields!

At the top of the stony rim you have a beautiful view towards Bindbole Woord. The river was wriggling like a silver snake through the pine-forest, and if you follow that direction you can even get a glimpse of Rushock Bog. Its a really impressive sight from high above.

The two waterfalls flow to the west, right trough Bindbole Wood

If you go to the west again you can travel the whole northern mountain-ridge, which is keeping the Shire away from the haunting ruins of Evendim. Alas, you cannot cross this rim, due to an invisible wall. But, with some determination you can travel to the Pinglade Dourhand Camp, jump over the wooden palisade and go right to Needlehole. The only disadvantage is, that you can only travel a small strip of the rocky hill. The whole norther mountain range is shielded massively by lots of invisible walls. If someone can sneak past these walls, keep me informed!

Seeing Esteldin from above

Many players have visited Esteldin. It's an old ruin full of Rangers and a major craft center for Tailors and Tinkers. Its an impressive place to see it from above, with all these sturdy walls and fortified towers. If you want to visit the ruins and have a good look from above, go to Dol Dinen. Somewhere at that nasty place you can enter the mountains. These mountains are vast and one of the best rocky places to visit in the North Downs.

The whole mountain area between Kingsfell and Rhunenland,

is an excellent off road area to explore

There are some peaks to climb, but none of them will give you a sneak peek into the Orc and Troll camps of Dol Dinen. The reason for this obscured view of Dol Dinen is an evil fog in the air, which will darken you sight.

Anyway, the mountain area south of Esteldin and east of Meluinen is vast and a small wonder to explore. ifyou ever wanna visit an off road area in LOTRO, this is the place to be.

The south part of the mountain area, near Meluinen

Southern part, looking west

Lots of small peaks to explore!

Obscured view in the western mountain range, due to the foul air in Dol Dinen

Well if you wanna see a breathtaking view, one of the best in Lotro from above, travel the whole mountain-range to Esteldin. It is a nice trip, full of green and rocky mountain peaks and some can even be climbed.

In the center of the mountain-range between Kingsfell and Rhunenland

Almost there, deep in the valley lies Esteldin

Good old, Esteldin. Even more beautiful from above
Esteldin, east part
If you are bold, you can even climb the walls of Esteldin. There are 3 layers, and the middle one is the best to explore. Unfortunately you cannot climb the crescent shaped arcs, but there is a lot to see on the stone roofs of this big ruin. I even tried to jump across, to the northern part. I failed at my first attempt, but maybe ... if you try hard enough you can jump across the entrance way and visit the northern part. Who dares?

Esteldin from the roof

Recently I want to see Esteldin again, and lo and behold, I managed to enter the northern mountain range of Esteldin. You can visit a small ruin higher up on the mountain ridge, with an ancient towerhouse. You can also venture to the plains which are bordering the Mountain range of Angmar. Some pictures of my voyage in this hitherho uncharted part of the North-downs are given below.

The Hidden World behind Ost Guruth

You have probably been in Agamaur, east of the ruins of Ost Guruth, in the Lone-lands. It is a very weird ruin with red water and a strange red hue in the air. There are some dangerous walking trees and some nasty hidden 'turnips' on long legs. Low level characters can enter these areas too, but you have to be very careful. On the other hand, there is a trick to see it vere safely, from the northern mountain ridge which is the border of Agamaur. If you want to see it from above, climb some mountains west of Ost Guruth.

The hills near Nain Enidh are arid and almost without vegetation

The mountains north of Ost Guruth

Brown lands, with on the horizon the red swamp of Haragmar
Ost-Guruth
Nearost, a halforc infested ruin
The mountainridge of Nain Enidh and Ost Guruth is easy accessible, even for level 20 players. Of course you need a horse to jump, but thats always the trick to enter these off road areas. The trick is to find some hidden place, and after some jumping experiences, you will emerge - like by magic - on the brown hills. Its near a place with trees, and just try to jump trough a wall or some columns. To find these spots, watch out for small open areas ('slits') between the walls or pillars. With a war-steed you have to learn to 'feel' such spots. If you experience some 'rubberbanding' - like you are stretched back and forth on an elastic string - there is a chance that you find some magic pass between two normally inaccessible areas.

To the west, heading for Weathertop

Weathertop, as seen from the northern mountain area
The mountain ridge can be travelled a long way, either westwards of eastwards. But ... be cautious. The west part leads to uncharted - unfixed - territory and if you dont read the warnings, you will be teleported to a starter area in Bree-land. I for example, reappeared in Archet. But, if you know the trick, you can enjoy the barren mountain area north of Ost Guruth.

South of Agamaur, there is a red swamp called Haragmar

At a short distance, a foul red smog will emerge

Off Map Places in Lotro

Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) is a huge world, and its larger every year! There are many places to visit, and some are really breathtaking. Lots of people are playing this game because of the atmosphere and beautiful landscapes. And that's the same reason why I am playing this game now since September 2007.

Orthanc, a famous landmark which can be visited at lvl 65

The Argonath, you can swim between the statues!

Some places are hard to reach and are an adventure on there own. But, with a clever path through the mountains or a forest, you can reach it. But the most challenging parts of Middle Earth are the mountaintops and hill which seem nearly impossible to reach. They are simply too high or too steep to climb by foot or by horse. Well, in fact this is not partially true. Some inaccessible landmarks, which should be indeed inaccessible, can be reached. You need only luck, determination and a keen eye for spots to climb.
From the web: Aughaire (spot not visited by myself)
From the web: Frostbluff (spot not visited by myself)
From the web, a stunning rock-carving in the mountains (where?)
On this page I show you some pictures from my own adventures in Lotro, and some from people who have been at places I couldn't reach. The point is, if an inaccessible place is known to be reached, the devs close is for sure. Most of the time you see nothing of a closed spot, but you will 'feel' it when you reached it: its closed by an invisible wall. You just bump into something solid, and can't proceed any further.

Ah well, it's always worth a try to reach an inaccessible spot, take a picture and be happy that you have ever reached it. If you wanna know some nice spots, just read my blogs and try to figure out who to reach them. I am not gonna tell you exactly how I reached them, since that would spoil the adventure. Moreover, there is always a risk that a known climbing spot to a seemingly inaccessible spot, will be closed by the devs. Sometimes its understandable, but someplaces are just fun to visit and worth to be explored.

I hope you will enjoy my blogs and the wonderful world of Lord of the Rings Online!

Most off road places can be explored in the Shire. And thats fun, because lots of people don't visit this region anymore above level 20.

Hides - The best farming places in Lotro

In this simple guide I will show you where to farm the following hides:
Tier 1 - Light hides
Tier 2 - Medium hides
Tier 3 - Sturdy hides
Tier 4 - Pristine hides
Tier 5 - Exceptional hides
Tier 6 - Magnificent hides
Tier 6 - Extraordinary hides
Tier 7 - Large hides
Tier 8 - Riddermark hides

Tier 1 - Where to Farm Light Hides

Level 1-12 light hide dropping animals are plentiful in the starter areas of Bree-land, Ered Luin and The Shire. If you are still a few short, go to the following areas:

The Shire[best place!]: go to the Wolf Den in the ruins north of Stock, directly north of the river. These ruins are near Puddifoot's Fields (30.9S,64W) and Bridgefields Wall (30.6S,64.2W). If you loot all wolves completely, they will respawn pretty quick and your bags will be in no time full with light hides. An alternative is the wolf-den at 30.5S 72.6W, NW of Hobbiton, near a farm.
Bree-land: visit the Yellow Tree (32.7S 48.0W) in Chetwood South (Bree-land). You can also find lots at the Wolves den in the Combe area (North of the lumber yard).
Ered Luin: alternative areas are the Hunter's Notch (18.6S 100.6W) in north Ered Luin and Nen Hilith (29.0S 94.1W) in south Ered Luin

Tier 2 - Where to Farm Medium Hides

Medium hides drop from beasts, level 13 to 23, in Bree-land, Ered Luin, The Shire, Lone-lands and North Downs.

Step out the West Gate of Bree and you are in a medium hide farming territory. Try also the "boar pit" (27.5S 52.3W), the road area between Adso's Camp (29.3S 56.8W) and the Brandywine Bridge (31.4S 63.0W ) or the area between Thornley's Farm (25.2S 53.8W), Snarling Hollow (24.2S 54.7W) and the Old Greenway Fort (24.0S 53.1W). My personal favorite is the eastern part of the Brandy Hills[best place!] and the adjacent bear den. it is a quiet place with lots of animals which can provide hides for you. But, in Bree-land - which is one of the biggest zones in Lotro - many places are as good as this place.

Two other good areas are the bears at Withywindle in the Old Forest and the yellowfang wolves in the Weather Hills
Old Forest: starting at Tom Bombadil's house, go downhill and follow the river westwards until it ends. At the end you will find a shallow swamp with lots of bears that drop medium hides.
Weather Hills: at Sawtooth’s area (28.7S, 41.7W) there are many howling and lurking yellowfangs, who drops plenty of medium hides. This place is at the edge between Bree-land and the  Lone-lands, northeast of the Midgewaters. It is also known as the Wolf den near the Weatherway in the Weather Hills.

Btw: the Wolf Den in Northern Breeland, is also an alternative

Tier 3 - Where to Farm Sturdy Hides

Sturdy hides drop from beasts, level 24 to 34, in the Lone-lands, North Downs, Evendim and Trollshaws. You'll get some sturdy hides leveling through these areas. But for serious sturdy hide farming, North Downs offers better mob density at the low-end of the tier. Try the level 24-25 wargs and wolves in Haud Eglan (7.7S 49.5W) or the level 28-30 beast dens throughout Northern Kingsfell (8.2S 45.4W).

Best and fast places
North Downs - [best place!]Wargs den in Nam Amlug, just southeast of the entrance to Angmar. At a higher level the aurochs at the lake are an easy meat for you. They drop 2 sturdy hides and they re-spawn very quickly. Best to circle around and clean the area constantly!
Trollshaws - Ruins of Ost Durgonn - just east of The Last Bridge, north of the road. There are lots of cave claws here that drop sturdy hides.

Tier 4 - Where to Farm Pristine Hides

Pristine hides drop from beasts, level 35 to 43, in Evendim, Trollshaws, Misty Mountains and Angmar. With the steady increase in the number of hides required for each crafting tier, this is the tier where the serious farming begins.

Pristine in Trollshaws

Wolf den in Drauglad (35.0S, 13,9W), near the Bruinen Gorges, has a great density of level 35-37 wolves. You can reach it by travelling to Thorenhad (31.7S, 15.0W) and then go south. It is also a place to grind the Trollshaws Wolf-slayer deed (+1 Discipline), so you may have some company there.
A wolf named Karnasht, spawns among the regulars and drops an adamant shard.

An other good place is the Bear den, directly south of Thorenhead in Trollshaws. After killing all the bears, go east of the road and kill bears at that spot. Wolves and deers also drop pristine hides. When finished, return to bear den south of Thorenhead and start all over again.

Pristine in Misty Mountains[best place!]
Caldwell Pool (22.6S, 1.2E), has a great density of level 40-41 wargs. It's also a popular place to grind the Misty Mountains Warg-slayer deed (+1 Justice). If you need also the deed, try this spot. When you are of higher level, go to the Hoar-mantle area just above Glóin's Camp (24.9S, 4.0W) . These beasts drop 2 hides per kill.

Pristine in Evendim
Nan Orngon (7.7S, 61.8W), has a great density of level 36-37 bears and you can reach it by travelling to Ost Forod (7.4S, 64.3W) and then go east, downhill. A named bear, Grizzule, spawns atop the spire in the center and drops an adamant shard.

Pristine in Angmar
Cave claws in Ram Duath will drop pristine hides, southeast of Aughair
.

Tier 5 - Where to Farm Exceptional Hides

Exceptional hides drop from beasts, level 44 to 50, in Angmar, Forochel, Misty Mountains and Sarnur. The suggested areas below are for the low end of the level range - faster kills means less time spent farming.

Exceptional in Eastern Angmar [best place!]
Dolroth in southeastern Maethad, a place east of Gabilshathûr (in the most southeast corner of the eastern Angmar, 1.4S, 21.4W) has a good density of level 46-47 cave-claws and wargs. Unless you are hoping to advance the Angmar Warg-slayer deed (+1 Determination), focus on the cave-claws around (1.4N, 24.2W) where the density is greater. Go to Gabilshathur (3.6S, 26.4W) and wind your way to the far eastern edge of the map. Turtles in Malenhad drop also Exceptional hides, plus you get the bonus Lethal Sharp claws.

Exeptional in Eregion
The Burnt Tor (49.1S, 10.1W), has a great density of level 50-51 wargs. The level 50 wargs drop exceptional hides and the level 51 wargs drop magnificent hides.

Exceptional in Forochel
Southwest of Voi-teltta, in Itä-Mâ around 9.0 N 72.0 W, there are a bunch of snowmantle cows and they drop 2 exceptional hides. They have a fast respawn rate so you can stay as long as you like.
There are also two good spots near Pynti-leiri (9.2N, 70.6W), which is close to the stable of Pynti-peldot (11.4N, 69.8W) and down the road at  Kissa-Sari (5.6N, 78.5W). Both regions have a great density of level 45-46 Sabertooth cats. Paha-Peto, a named sabertooth, can spawn in either location and drops a beryl shard. Both locations advance the Forochel Sabertooth Slayer deed (+1 Fortitude) and the cats drops also Forochel reputation items.

Exceptional in Misty Mountains
The North High Pass (23.3S, 4.3E) area in Misty Mountains has a good density of level 45-47 wargs, especially in the NE corner. There is a stable at Hrimbarg (24.3S 6.9E), so you can reach this excellent place pretty quickly. Moreover, the wargs in the Misty Mountains are also handy for the Warg-slayer deed (+1 Justice). Keep an eye out for Sulmog and The Antlered King,
these beryl shard droppers can appear if heavy snow suddenly comes up.

Tier 6 - Where to Farm Magnificent Hides

Magnificent hides drop from beasts, level 51 to 54 in Eregion and Moria. There are only a few good places to farm these.

Magnificent in Moria[best place!]
Katub-zahar (7.0S, 111.0W) in the Great Delving, also known as the library, is the best spot for harvesting magnificent hides. Hunt the level 51-52 deep-claws here, you can do it upstairs and downstairs. It is just north of the stable in Dolven-view (8.5S, 112.2W).
Bonuses: Rocktooth (mithril flake dropper), a named deep-claw, sometimes spawns here. Also, killing deep-claws advances the Moria Deep-claw Slayer deed (+1 Tolerance). Loot also includes IXP runes and Moria reputation items.

The southeast corner of Silvertine Lodes, informally known as the "riddle room" (12.6S, 111.1 W), has a good density of level 53-54 dragonets and deep-claws. A stable is nearby in the Rotting Cellar (15.1S, 112.1 W) of the next zone: The Waterworks. Bonus: Killing dragonets advances the Moria Dragonet-slayer deed (+1 Zeal). These small dragons also drop IXP runes and Moria reputation items.

I recently discoverd by slaying dragonets in Zirakzigil, that they drop magnificent too. Maybe an alternative spot, especially when you combine it with the dragonet-slayer deed to ear +1 Zeal.

Magnificent in Eregion
The Burnt Tor (49.1S, 10.1W), has a great density of level 50-51 wargs. Only the level 51 wargs drop magnificent hides -- the level 50 wargs drop exceptional hides. You can reach it by the nearby stable in Echad Dunann (50.5S, 7.8W).
A second set of wargs can be found in Torech Andraug (50.7S, 9.6W) and even more somewhat south of the river bed. Killing wargs advances the Eregion Wolf and Warg-slayer deed (+1 Confidence). Redhorn Goats, just north of Burnt Tor drop two each, on most occasions. Tál Caradhras in Eregion an alternative place for hunting random wildlife.

Tier 6 - Where to Farm Extraordinary Hides

Extraordinary hides drop from beasts, level 55 to 65+ in Moria, Lothlorien and Mirkwood.

Extraordinary in Lothlorien[best place!]
The best place to farm extraordinary hides is the Golden Wood area. It is packed with level 58-60 beasts and you can quick travel to Caras Galadhon, the elven city in the center of the Golden Wood. An alternative route - if you have never been in this zone - is to use the travel route to the 1st Hall in Moria. If you reach that stable, walk to the exit and you are in the far western area of Lothlorien. After you leave the Mines of Moria, you have to travel to the Golden Wood. Just hit 'M' on the keyboard and you will see on the map the location of the Golden Wood with yellow Mallorn trees immediately.
After you have passed the river Nimrodel, you have plenty of beasts to farm. Just don't kill the protected beasts, otherwise you lose Galadhrim reputation points! There are some rare beasts wandering in this area too, which drop mithril flakes .

Extraordinary in Moria
With its many zones and instances, Moria offers several opportunities for farming extraordinary hides. Places with lots of cave claws in Moria, gives you plenty of extraordinary hides.  Second Hall (8.6S, 103.2W) in Nud Melek has a good concentration of level 57-58 cave claws and dragonets (with some orcs and goblins mixed in), but is somewhat remote from 21st Hall.

Extraordinary in Mirkwood
In the Mirkeaves area, Fallug (16.7S, 61.8W) has a great density of level 61 boars. The surrounding area has a good density of level 61 wargs if you run short of spawns. A stable master is nearby in Echad Sirion (15.3S, 61.2W). If you are running the daily repeatables, killing level 65 wargs in Naur-hoit (19.1S, 47.9W) advances a quest from Mithechad (17.6S, 48.2W) while you farm hides.

Tier 7 - Where to Farm Large hides

Known good places are:
  • Trum Dreng area, which is located in the upper north-west corner of Dunland, directly south of the Mournshaws. This place has plenty of lvl 66 River-dwelling oxes (neutral, wil drop 1 hide), lots of boars (lvl 66 Wild Thorn-tuskers, will threaten and drop 1 hide) and lvl 66 Trum Dreng Pack-wolves (near Dire Hollow, 76.8S 23.1W, which will always attack, dop 1 hide). There is a relatively low concentration of hostile humans (lvl 66) from the Dragon Clan here.
  • The plains of the Starkmoor, which are located in the west central part of Dunland (82.0S, 20.0W) are also excellent. There are large numbers of oxen here as well, plus a warg/wolf den. The signature bulls will drop 2-3 hides. This area is also good for your beast-slayer deed!
  • And, if you like: the Warg area in SW Mirkwood, called Drownholt.

Tier 8 - Where to FarmRiddermark hides
For Riddermark hides you have to go to east Rohan. Known good places for farming are:

The Wold

Fang Point (44.4S, 51.4W) is a Warg-camp directly north of the Memorial of Eorl, south of the fast travel location Feldburg. It has two dens with lvl 76-66 wargs, one to the north and one to the south. Around the warg camps, there is a warband running of the lvl 77 warg Hanrun, with 2 Wold Warg Pack-runners as adds.
Alpha packs: the warg packs directly south of Feldburg, around 43S 52W, seems promising, but are not. Only the alpha's and regular wargs drops hides, the annoying adds - Wold Warg Pack-runners - doesn't. So if Feldburg has some busy hidefarmers, travel to the Howling Wood.
The Howling Wood (44.7S, 46.8W) is a Warg-den in the south eastern part of the Wold, near Floodwend, with lots of wargs (lvl 76-77). They have a quick respawn and you can harvest many Riddermarks Hides in a short time.best place

Norcrofts
Âmbal's Den (51.8S, 57.6W), which is located in a huge wolf-area in the stony hills (look at your map!) north of Faldham and south of the stream that runs across the Norcrofts.  It is probably the most rewarding area in this zone of the Norcrofts.

A good alternative is the evil bear camp, the Valley of the Láthbears (Láthbears Den). It is situated at 54.1S, 52.8W, in the woods southeast of Elthengels. There is a warband too with a big bear, called Swertríper, along with a pair of smaller Daunting láthbears.

Tier 1- Apprentice: Rowan wood
As an apprentice you can make weapons from Rowan wood. This kind of wood can be found in the starter areas. Bree-land and  the Shire are the most obvious choices. You can also look in Ered Luin, but this region is a bit remote to gather resources.

Lore: the name "rowan" is derived from the Old Norse name for the tree, raun. In Latin it is Sorbus, a northern tree-species with beautiful orange berries in the autumn. The most common species is Sorbus aucuparia, and this tree grows on poor to intermediate nutrient rich soils. It is a common tree between oaks and birches and grows up far north, in subarctic places. Sorbus is just a small tree, easy to cut.

Start your wood gathering on the road from Michel Delving to Budgeford

Rowan in The Shire
The Shire is a good source for rowan wood. You can find it almost everywhere, but most places have a scattered distribution of wood branches. At a low level, its safe to follow the road from Michel Delving to Frogmorton (see map below). Along this road, starting after Waymeet, you can find here and there Rowan wood. Watch your radar closely, Don't forget to activate your track Wood skill and start looking in your radar until one or more blue arrows emerges. That's a sign that a pile of wood can be found. The best trick is to start from Waymeet or Frogmorton and travel between this places back and forth. You will gather a fair amount of Rohan Wood along this track.

Rich concentrations can be found around the southern border of Rushog Bog and in  the northern zone of the Bindbole Wood best place. Bot locations are situated at the NW part of the map, west of Brockenborings and Hobbiton. At low level these places can be a bit dangerous, but if you are careful you never will be troubled by lots of evil creatures. Best advise is to stay away from places with lots of humanoids, like goblins and evil dwarves (dourhands).
Most other places are relatively rare in wood. Skip them if you don't need them for a quest or deed.

North of the Bridgefields and around Brockenboring lies the high level areas, and you will find a lot of Ash wood there, the next tier of the woodworker (tier 2).

If you follow the Brandywine river, you will even find two Yew branches. They are close to the border of Evendim, a level 30 zone which you will enter when you travel a few meters north of the Yew branches.

Rowan and Ash in The Shire

Rowan in Ered Luin
Ered Luin is not a very well known place for tracking wood, but it is in fact not a bad place either. Rowan wood is best to be collected between Celondim and Kheledul, where you can find scattered wood branches in the grassy fields. There are no big dangers here, only when you run into some bad wolves.
The road between Thorin's gate and Noglond - in the Vale of Thrain - contains also some easy spots for Rowan. But beware, at some places lynxes may be in hiding to attack you. Farther east, between Noglond and the barrows of Haudh Lin - in the Low-lands - there are also some scattered branches to be found. There are some wolves and bears here, but as in most part of Ered Luin, no great dangers.

Rowan and Ash in Ered Luin

Rowanin Bree-land (see Bree-land map below)
Bree-land is a major zone with lots of opportunities to harvest rowan and - espcially - ash wood. The Rowan wood places are centered around the Midgewater Marshesbest place, and small pockets of Rowan can also be found in the Chetwood North and South and around the lake north of Staddle. Locations with Rowan branches are scattered, but if you circle the Midgewater thoroughly, you will gather a lot in no time. It is not a very dangerous place, although goblins, marsh flies and sometimes spiders can be a nuisance.  If you want a  quieter place, with only some lone wolves, go to the Shire for Rowan. But remember: Bree-land is far the richest of this wood type and even the richest for Ash 9which can be found nearly everywhere! There is even a small spot - the NE shore of the big lake Nen Harn, with yew branches in Bree-land. Don't be surprised about the vast and endless plains and scattered forests in Bree-land, since this zone is one of the biggest in the whole game!

Tier 2 - Journeyman: Ash

Lore: the ash tree belongs to the tree-genus of Fraxinus and more then 50 species are known worldwide. They grow on nutrient rich wet to moist soils and they can endure shallow inundations of river-water. The tree's common English name, ash, goes back to the Old English æsc, while the name Fraxinus originated in Latin. Both words also meant "spear" in their respective languages. The leaves are mostly pinnately compound, but some species have simple leaves. The seeds can be propelled away by the wind and they are popularly known as keys or helicopter seeds. Rowans or Mountain Ashes are unrelated to true ashes and belong to the genus Sorbus though the leaves and buds are superficially similar.See also: Black Ash.

Ash

Leaves and propeller fruits

Ash in Bree-land best zone
If you want Ash wood, Bree-land is the place to be! Nearly everywhere west of Breetown and north of the Chetwood Borth there are plenty spots to gather Ash. Some places have nasty orcs or aggressive wolves, and if you want a quiet place with an easy to go harvest, go gathering around Halecatch Lake, south of Breetown. The road between Breetown and Adso's Camp is also an easy spot to gather Ash.
Ash is so abundance in Bree- land that you have only to look on the map above for the riches harvest places nearby. Just pick a place and go gathering Ash wood. I like the Brandy Hills and the forest north of it (cross the river), but the Far Chetwood Eastern and Southern Breefields are also fine places for this type of wood.
If you travel to the shores of the big Lake Nen Harn, you will even find some Yew Wood, bet there are nasty Turtle Snappers there, which can move surprisingly fast! If you travel north along the eastern shore of this lake, you will finally enter the North-Downs and this is the best zone for gathering Yew branches.

Wood gathering places in Bree-land

Looking for Ash branches in the Far Chetwood

Ash in Ered Luin(see Ered Luin map above)
The ash wood in Ered Luin is concentrated in Rath Teraig, with swarms of goblins, and the barrows area of Haudh Lin, with lots of undeads.
If you need goblins you can go to Rath Teraig, west of Duillond. It is ;literally crowded with goblins and if you are of the same level, you have to do a lot of fights before you can harvest some wood. There are not many ash branches to be found in Rath Teraig and Haudh Lin is - in Ered Luin - the better place for wood.

So, if you need more space, travel to Haudh Lin. That place is full of spiders and liches. If you are careful, you can loot more ash between the barrows of the wights than in the goblin infested ruins.

Of course, the richest places with ash are in Bree-land, but if you like the elven and dwarven environment of Ered Luin, you at least know where to look for some ash wood.

Ash in The Shire(see Shire map above)
The Greenfields - with goblins and bears -, the Bridgefields and the plains east of Brockenborings are the high level areas of The Shire. You will find a lot of Ash wood in these places, as indicated in the Shire map above (see Rohan wood map). It is much less common then in Bree-land, but if you have quests to do with the hobbits, these are the places to look for ash wood. If you want a quick run to gather lots of Ash, it is better to travel to Breetown and look in the surroundings west and south of this fine small town.

Ash in the Lone-lands
All areas west of theeast rim of Weathertop have ash branches, but it is not such a high density as in Bree-land. If you are here for quests, than Ash-gathering is ok of course, don't let that wood rot!But if you need loads of Ash wood, its better to travel a bit to the west and gather Ash in Bree-land.

Ash in the North Downs (see North Downs map below)

In the North Downs Ash is concentrated in the eastern part, along the Greenway, in Annundir best placeand the lower (southern) half of the Fields of Fornost. If you are in dire need of lots of Ash wood, it's better to travel to Bree-land (see description above), since this zone is the real Ash-wood heaven! If you need Yew wood, stay in the North Downs, since this zone is the best for that type of wood.

Tier 3 - Expert: Yew

Loreyew is a small- to medium-sized evergreen tree, growing 10–20 metres high. Old trees can be even up to 28 m. The bark is thin, scaly brown, coming off in small flakes aligned with the stem. The leaves are dark green, and are shaped like flattened needles of a yule tree. The leaves are highly poisonous. The name yew is derived from the Welsh ywen, a typical name for this tree. In Latin the name is Taxus, meaning toxic. The tree is grows relatively slow and can be very long-lived, at least 2000 years and probably even much longer! Big Yew-treetrunks of 4 metres in diameter are probably belonging to trees of 2000 years old. The wood of yew is world famous for longbow making, escpecially composite longbows. These bows are constructed with the heartwood of yew on the inside of the bow, while the sapwood is on the outside. This takes advantage of the natural properties of yew wood. since the heartwood resists compression while the sapwood resists stretching. Much yew however is knotty and twisted, so unsuitable for bowmaking. Most trunks do not give good staves and even in a good trunk much wood has to be discarded. Yew wood was also used for lute-making, so minstrels take your chance with a good piece of yew wood!

Yew in the North Downs best zone
The North Downs is definitely the best place for gathering Yew wood in huge quantities.
Its nearly everywhere, especially west of the mountainrange of Esteldin. If you travel from Nan Amlug via Kingsfell to Meluinen, and you stay at the east side of the grassy and hilly landscape, you will find a lot. If you have some business to do on the east side of Esteldin, that's no problem either. You can find yew wood in that part too, although not so abundant as in the Kingsfell area. In Dol Denen yew is even scare and you dont find any of in between the Angmarin tents in the upper NE. Some yew can also be found in the Fields of Fornost, but its a bit scarce here too.

Ash and Yew in the North Downs
Yew in the Lone-lands (see Lone-lands map above)

Yew can be find in small quantities in the Lone-lands, east of Weathertop (see map above). Its widely scattered and not in such high densities as in the North Downs, west of Esteldin. For both zones, level 20 is sufficient for gathering yew wood.

Yew in Evendim

Evendim is the zone north of The Shire and west of the Northdowns. At low level you can enter the zone from the Shire, near Bullroarer's Sward. You need to be at least level 28-30 to gather wood in Evendim, at lower levels it is definitely a very dangerous place. Most yew can be found east of Tinundir and north of the gigantic stone statue of the King. The forest area north of Parth Aduial, around the ruins of Ost Foroth best place, is very rich in yew and a good place to gather it in large quantities. If you are level 25 or somewhat lower, it is better to go to the North Downs, east of Esteldin (see map above). At the west side of the lake and along the shore south of the King's statue yew is absent and replaced by lebethron.

Yew and Lebethron in Evendim

Yew in Bree-land(see Bree-land map above)
Some yew can also be found in Bree-land, in the far north-eastern part. It is situated along the eastern shores of Nen Harn, the big lake at the border of Bree-land and the North Downs (see the Bree-land map above). If you are low level be aware of the turtles here. They move surprisingly fast and have a nasty bite!

Tier 4 - Artisan: Lebethron Wood

Lore:Lebethron is a tree restricted to Middle Earth. It was a hardwood tree, like an oak, that grew in Ithilien, a place in Gondor. It´s wood is of a dark, almost black colour and is often used for woodcarving work by gondorian artisans. The walking-staves which where presented to Frodo and Sam by Faramir, where also made from Lebethron. Also, the casket in which the Crown of Gondor was kept after the death of Eärnur - and before the coming of Elessar - was made of Lebethron. Lebethron was a Gondor Sindarin word, related to Quenya lepsë, "finger" and oron, "tree".

A Lebethron tree, with a fallen branch in Trollshaws
A Lebethron branch with typical hastate leaves

Lebethron in the Lone-lands (see Lone-lands map above)

The swamp in the southeast corner ofthe Lone Lands(see map above), Harloeg, has a small number of Lebethron nodes. Some Lebethron can also be found in Agamaur. Both places are guarded by signature foes, like lvl 29-30 trolls in Harloeg and lvl 29-30 undeads and evil trees in Agamaur. If you don't like signature foes, go to the Trollshaws, Evendim or the Misty Mountains. These places are much richer for Lebethron wood than the poor spots in the Lone landsand has not such dangerous foes.

Lebethron in Evendim (see Evendim map above)
As soon as you pass the giant stone statue of the King, and you travel southwards along the shore of the big lake, you will encounter several Lebehtron branches. The steep hills at this place contains also some Lebethron. The best locations however are situated at the western shore of Lake Evendim. You can reach it by a boat, near the marketplace of Tinundir. There are some fierce foes here, like wolves, bears, marsh-flies and garaudan hunters, but if you are careful the Evendim shore is a pretty easy place to gather huge quantities of Lebethron. Especially along the shore of the wooded area of Emyn Uial. I found even some branches on Tyl Ruinen, an island which is famous for lots of salamanders and some nasty turtles.
If you like a beautiful place and a peaceful lake, with great vista's, go to Evendim for Lebethron wood! It's quite empty, since most woodworkers gather it in Misty Mountains or Trollshaws.

Lebethron in Trollshaws
Along the road from the Last bridge (Southern Trollshaws) to the undeep part of the Bruinen river (the famous ford where Gandalf stopped the black riders), there are many harvest places of Lebethron. They are easy to loot, unless you anger some bears or - at night - nasty trolls. South and north of the road is plenty of Lebehtron to be found, but these areas are more dangerous then the road to Rivendell. In the High Moor, east of the ford, there are also some Lebethron branches to be found, although not as much as in the western part of Trollshaws.

plenty of Lebethron in Trollshaws

Lebethron in Angmar (see Angmar map below)
The South-western part of Angmar is rich in lebethron branches
.

Lebethron in Misty Mountains
You will find plenty of branches of Lebethron in the western half ofAngmar, roughly between Donnvail and Ram Duath. As soon as you enter Angmar from the Northdowns (take the right road into the mountains, just after the warg area of the North Downs; the left entrance leads you throug a dangerous road with lots of wyrms and drakes), you wil find plenty of lebethron along the road. An failry easy place is the eastern half of the Ram Duath and Fasach-Larron. More difficult - if you are of the same level as the mobs there - is the western part of the Ram Duath and Fasach-Falroid. You can also circle the most easy places constantly, and loot al the lebethron you can find. They will be respawned, if you complete your looting circle.
Lebethron and Black Ash in the Misty Mountains
Lebethron in Forochel
Although there are some pine forest in Forochel, I didn't find any wood in this zone. Possibly all branches are vanished under the snow...

Tier 5 - Master: Black Ash

Lore: Black Ash is a species of Fraxinus (ash), which grows in eastern Canada and northeastern United States. Its full Latin name is Fraxinus nigra, derived from thethe oldEnglish æsc, meanings spear, and nigra, a Latin word for black. It is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a height of 15–20 m and their trunk can be up to 60 cm. In rare circumstances the treetrunk can be as big as 26 meter and 1.6m in diameter.
The bark is thick and corky, with a grey color. Its becoming scaly and fissured with age. The leaves and fruits are like the common ash (see above). Black ashes grows commonly in swamps and it is one of the first trees to lose its leaves in the fall. This wood was used by Native Americans of the North East for making basketsIt is also a popular wood for making guitars and basses, due to its good resonant qualities.

Leaves of the Black Ash

A corky treetrunk in a swamp: that must be black Ash!

Where to find Black Ash
Black Ash can be found in Eregion and eastern Angmar. If you like some snow, it will be the eastern half of Misty Mountains. Unlike Eregion it cannot be accessed easily in the Misty's or Angmar. For the Misty Mountains you have to travel to the giant region in the SE corner of the map (Giant Halls); or the goblin and wolf area in the NE corner. In most other places in Misty Mountains you will find Lebethron Wood.

For Angmar however you need to do some quests to enter the eastern part (epic Book quest, books 6). If you have done these quests, you can look for Black Ash  south of Meathad and Gorothlad. Its not a very cosy place, since there are lots of mobs and it is a long way to travel. But maybe you can combine your wood gathering activities with some quests, slayer deeds (orcs, wolves) or farming hides.

Random drops: some black ash branches, and especially some heavy black ash branches, will drop occasionally Spider silk and Black Ash Heartwood. Both are rare crafting ingredients.

Black Ash in Misty Mountains (see Misty Mountains Map above)

Black ash in the Misty Mountains can only be found in the eastern, most dangerous part of this zone. There are 3 concentrations of ash wood: one around the western part of Giant Hallas, one around South High Pass and one around North High Pass. The Giant Halls area is the most dangerous of this three, with lvl 44 signature trolls and giants. At the high pass there are wargs and goblins in the northern part, and wyrms in the southern part. Although the same level as in Giant Halls, these mobs are no signatures and easier to overcome than the awful giants.

Black Ash in Eregion

In Eregion, Black ash is more or less restricted north of the dry riverbed of Nan Sirannon. So, roughly north of the line Mirobel and the Walls of Moria (see the map below).
In fact, Eregion is one of the best zones to gather black ash wood. Its easy accessable from the the Trollshaws. Just ride south along the Bruinen River in trollshaws, and if you follow the east bank, you will finally find the road to Eregion. You can also quick travel from the stable in Rivendell to Echad Gwingris, or other places in Eregion.
Just pick a zone which is the most comforable for you, ans gather lots of black ash in Eregion!

Black Ash and Ilex in Eregion(red circles: heavy branches)

Black Ash in Forochel
There seems to be no wood at all in this zone. Nada, Rien, Nichts, Nothing, Ingenting, Ei mitään, ничего...   :(

Black Ash in Angmar
In Angmar, black ash can only be found in the eastern half of this zone. The forests at Gorothlad and especially south of Maethad are relatively rich in black ash. Some scattered branches I found in the open forest north of Duvuinen and along the rod from this area to Himbar. At himbar there are a lot of spiders, and somehow this has an effect on the normal and heavy branches of black ash: you will find Spider silk as a fairly regular random drop here.
Two branches were found in the elite master area east of Barad Gularad, but the rest of this very dangerous area (lots of 25.000 morale elite masters here) has no black ash at all. I checked the Rift of Nurz Ghashu, the ruins of Imlad Balchorth and all the pools and little volcanoes of Malenhad, but these places didn't contain any black ash branches. West of Malenhad, the ash branches are replace by lebethron branches.

Tip: remember that you have to complete one of the epic books (wasn't it Book 6?), to enter the eastern half of Angmar. You need to pass some strange, devil-like statues, and this is only possible after completing the complete quest-line of Epic book 6, which can be done solo.

Black Ash in Angmar

Tier 6 - Supreme: Ilex and Mallorn Wood

Lore:

Mallorns are huge Elven trees, which grew in Tol Eressëa, Númenor and Lothlórien. Mallorn means 'golden tree' and refer to the leaves' colour in autumn and winter. Their bark was silver and smooth, and its boughs somewhat upswept after the manner of the beech; but it never grew save with a single trunk. Its leaves, where like those of the beech, but greater; pale green above and silver beneath, glistering in the sun. In the autumn they did not fall, but turned to pale gold. In the spring it bore golden blossom in clusters like a cherry, which bloomed on during the summer. As soon as the flowers opened the leaves fell, so that through spring and summer a grove of Mallorns was carpeted and roofed with gold, but its pillars were of grey silver. Its fruit was a nut with a silver shale.

Ilex is the Latin word for holly, ashrub or small tree with an evergreen and deciduous foliage and inconspicuous white flowers. The berries are red and often used in Christmas decorations. The small tree is generally slow-growing, and in Europe not much higher then 10 meter. Ilex in Latin means the holm-oak or evergreen oak. In the old times, oak and holly had the same name, Ilex. Originally the wood of holly (Ilex) was one of the traditional woods for bagpipes, som minstrels: take you chance and craft a holly bagpipe! Since medieval times the plant has carried a Christian symbolism, because of the spiny leaves, which are evergreen ('the eternal life') and maybe te red berries in the yule time referred to the blood of Christ during the crucifixion. However, the association of holly with the yule time celebrations almost certainly predates Christianity. Druids wore holly wreaths on their heads. In shields and heraldry of the great houses, holly is the symbol of truth.

Ilex has red berries and evergreen spiny leaves during the Yule time

Ilex in Eregion(see Eregion Map above)

Ilex can be found in the south-eastern part of Eregion, see the black ash map above. Although not so abundant as in the upper levels of Moria, Eregion is a very comforable zone to harvest ilex branches. In my opinion it is even one of the best zonesfor ilex, since the landscape consists just of grassy hills and dry riverbeds. No problems for getting lost or plumming to your dead in unexpected deeps, like the upper halls of Moria. If you are level 60, I would prefer even Eregion above Moria for the Ilex branches. Just circle around and gather all the Ilex branches you see, if you are finished, the branches have already respawned. The only thing you have to do in Eregion, is to circle around and gather wood...

Ilex in the Mines of Moria

Lots of Ilex-gathering places can be found in Moria. Probably the best place for Ilex is Zelem-Melek, a location which lies south of the 21st Hall. If you walk out at the south side or the southwestern corner of the 21st Hall, and go downstairs, you will eventually enter the halls and corridors of Zelem-Melek. You will find plenty of Ilex-logs here, but at level 50-55 it is a dangerous place to be. However, you can do lots of pup-up questst, so its worth the try!
Above lvl 65 it is an easy-to-go area, where you can harvest lots of Ilex wood in little time.
Other areas where you can gather Ilex wood are The Great Delving, Durin's Way, Silvertine Lodes and Waterworks. But I think Zelem-Melek is the best of all, so I have provided only this zone for Moria.
Conclusion:in my opinion, the best strategy is to concentrate your search for Ilex in one zone or area and skip all the others! If you don't like the dungeons of ugly Moria, then I can advise you to search for Ilex on the grassy planes of Eregion (see above).

Tip: look for heavy branches of Ilex, which can drop a Mithril flake!

Ilex places south of 21st Hall

Where to find Mallorn

The woods of Lothlorien are superb for harvesting mallorn wood. Other places are Mirkwood and Enedwaith, but both places are more dangerous than the lovely Golden Forest in Lothlorien. So, if you need a lot of mallorn: off you go and up to Lothlorien!

Tip: look for heavy branches of Mallorn, which can drop a Mithril flake!

Mallorn places in Lothlorien

Tier 7 - Westfold: Birch

Birch Branches are found in level 65-75 regions of Enedwaith, Dunland and The Great River.

Lore: birches belong to the genus of Betula and the trees are commonly known for their striking white trunks. The color, however, differs with each species, but generally most species has a shade of white. The common name "birch" is derived from birka, an old Germanic word meaning "white", "bright", or "to shine". It refers of course to the color of the trunk.

The bark often separates into thin, papery plates, especially in a species with a striking white trunk: the paper-birch. These thin papery plates can be used for drawings and paintings. The papery plates are resistant to decay, due to the resinous oil it contains.

Birches can grow on relatively acid and nutrient poor grounds, like sandy soils and peatlands. In nutrient poor mires and bogs, the birch replace the ash, which - on the contrary - grows along nutrient rich borders of lakes, swamps and streams.

Birch in The Great River new

As soon as you pass the border of SE Lothlorien, at the vineyards, you enter the zone of the Great River. This is a zone rich in birch wood and you can find it nearly everywhere. If you are at the same level as the mobs around, it is wise to gather wood while you are also doing quests. The area around Thinglad is the less dangerous part of The great River, so it is an excellent starting point to gather branches of birch.

Birch branches can be found in the Twilight Gorge, around Stangard, in the Rushgore and even in the treeless Brown Lands. The Dimlight Gorge is the most dangerous part of The Great River. You will encounter some gargantuan spiders, trolls and walking pine-trees (Huorns), of 75.000 morale and higher.

Don't forget to harvest the heavy birch branches, since they will drop occasionally the rare cracked Rhi sigil. I found these sigils in Dimlight Gorge and the Brown lands (both level 75 areas).

One curious drop of oak has to be mentioned too. When harvesting wood in the northern rim of the Dimlight Gorge, near a big spider hole, I found 1 branch of oak. This is a tier 8 type of wood which is common in East Rohan, but must be absent in The Great River. Maybe it was just pure luck that I found oak; a real once in a lifetime chance. When I checked the spot again (marked orange on the map below), I found only birch...

Plenty of Birch in The Great River

Tier 8 - Eastemnet: Oak

Oak Branches can be found in East Rohan, as soon as you pass the border at the bridge of The Great River to The Wold. Until now I have mapped the following zones:
- The Wold
- Norcrofts
- Sutcrofts

Oak in The Wold newbest zone
As soon as you enter The Wold - at the bridge in thesoutheast part of The Great River - you enter East Rohan. This big part of Middle Earth contains 5 areas, and - surpisingly - the most easiest zone is also the richest zone for oak wood. I mapped the part of The Wold north of Harwick almost completely, and as you can see it is full of Oak branches. At level 85 it is a pretty easy zone for oak wood, much easier than the other zones in East Rohan.
South of Harwick there is a distinct change in oak distribution: the nodes are sparse here and widely distributed. So, if you need a lot of oak, stay roughly north of Harwick and filly your bags as quickly you can!
I found one branch of Birch in The Wold, along the riverbank. Actually, this was already the map of The Great River, but after you have crossed the bridge into The Wold.

The Wold is undoubtedly the best zone for Oak wood in Lotro
Oak in the East Wallnew
The east Wall is a narrow strip of land between The Wold and the mighty waterfall the Rauros. This zone has nice vistas on the Argontah, the lake Nen Hochoel and the rock-island Tol Brandir.
Oak is distributed in small clusters, like in The Wold. You can find plenty along the road, bit most branches are guarded by melee or ranged orcs. So, be a bit carefull by picking the oak branches. Especially the southern part of the road, along Parth Galen and to the Sutcrofts (which is actually a dead end, blocked by an orc-blockade), is rich in oak. This zone is more dangerous than The Wold, but if you have some competion in wood gathering, the East Wall is an excellent alternative.

Distribution of Oak branches in the East Wall

Oak in Norcrofts new
In the Norcrofts you can find scattered branches of Oak, and this seems to be the normal distribution east and south of the Wold. There doesn't seem an particular area with large concentrations of oak branches here, like in The Wold.

In the Norcroft zone oak is widely scattered
Oak in the Entwash Valenew
The distribution of oak in the Entewash Wash is like all the zones west and south of The Wold: widely scattered and not so common as in the northern part of The Wold. There are no great concentrations of oak branches.

Oak is widely scattered in the Entwash Vale
Oak in Sutcrofts new
The Sutcrofts is one of the end zones where you will do quests in East Rohan. There are lots of quests at Snowbourn and Hytbold, so you can pick your wood while doing your quests and tasks here. But, be aware of roaming warbands between Snowbourn and Hytbold. They can hit you in the back while you are cutting wood. Kramp and Bugud, two notorious warband leaders, can hit a lot, together with their adds. If you are unaware of them, you are dead in a few seconds. Kramp can come dangerously close to Snowbourn, even close to the east entrance. Just watch the moving red flag on the map closely, while you are looking for wood. If such a flag (which is the location of a warband), is near to a wood branch, be on your guard - or run away! Like the Norcrofts, there is no area in the Sutcrofts with large concentrations of oak wood.

The Sutcrofts has also a widely scattered distribution of oak

Finding Scholar artifacts in Lotro

So, you’ve decided to take the path of the Scholar in Lotro. Be aware that this is one of the most difficult crafting professions. Not because it is hard to craft stuff or acquiring scholar crafting recipes. No, the problem is that the stuff you have to find is hard to obtain. As a scholar you are looking for artifacts, like an archeologist. You are looking for old pitchers, ancient vases, urns, old texts and hidden coffers and lockers which may contain ancient materials. Well, if you know something about these artifacts, I think you get the picture where you have to look for them. Right, in ruins!

The difficulty is that ruins are not so common in the world of Middle Earth as you may think. At least not so common as forests, shrubs and hills with wood and ore. So you have to discover them and investigate their occupants. The other problem is, that most of the ruins will be infested with enemy forces, poisonous spiders or some other fierce predator. So, in this perspective the Scholar is perhaps the hardest crafting profession there is. Elves and burglars may be better off as a scholar, since they can sneak in stealth into those dangerous ruins. But a brute force of hack and slash, or a magic daze or root can be very handy too. If you like danger, hunting enemies for scholar artifacts (goblins, orcs, trolls, thieves and brigands can drop now and then artifacts too) or looting ruins, the Scholar crafting profession is the thing for you!

In the table below you can see which artifacts are needed for which scholar tier. Also, each artifact contains a special kind of material and with these materials you can make all kinds of interesting stuff. Like power and morale pots, crafting buffs and buffs for shooting arrows, defense and attacks.

Most scholars are looking for artifacts, so they have to search in ruins and - mostly - have to kill a lot of evil creatures or man. This kind of scholar specialization can be called an archeologist.

If you don't like such an aggressive way to become a scholar, and you are more of the docile type, you can always become a gardener or a botanist. Why? because these specializations are both interesting to make - and sell (!) colorful dyes.

Making dyes

Another way to level your proficiency as a scholar, is making dyes. This can be done by looking for rare plant-species (the way of the botanist) or making dye ingredients by harvesting crops on a farm field (the way of the gardener).

Both ways are explained on a separate page.

Go to: dye making and dye-flora maps (click on this link)

The way of the archeologist: searching for artifacts

The most common way to level your proficiency as a scholar, is searching for artifacts. As said, the can be found mostly in ruins. Sometimes you have to look in enemy camps or in mines.

Tier 1 – Apprentice: Shattered Pitcher

A shattered pitcher contain the raw materials for first-tier scholar recipes. To use get these materials, your scholar must have a scholar's glass equipped. The Shattered Pitcher artifact contains the following raw materials for crafting:

- Aged Scraps of Text
- Early Third Age Relics
- Worn Tablet Fragments.

Shattered pitchers can be found in the starter areas of Bree-land, Ered Luin and the Shire.

Probably the best place to look for tier 1 scholar artifacts is Bree-land, where shattered pitchers can be found in the wide surroundings around the Midgewater Mires (see map). Some placesthere are easy to loot, but most are in ruins guarded by many mobs. So be careful!

Ered Luin is also OK for gathering Shattered pitchers, and like Bree-land most pitchers are located in ruins.

Not surprisingly, in the Shirescholar artifacts seems rare. This region is hardly known for ancient Elven occupation and big ruins are rare here. So, if you see one from a distance, it is worthwhile to explore that ruin. Until now, I have found 3 spotsonly: 2 in ruins and 1 around a abandoned farm-house.

For all known locations of Shattered pitchers (at least known to me), see the maps below. I have recently checked them and ommited old records where I couldn't find scholar artifacts.

Tier 2 -  Journeyman: Broken Urns and Woad plants

Tier 2 artifacts, broken urns, can be found in ruins with mobs of roughly lvl 15-25. A broken urn provides 2 kinds of raw material for crafting:

- Cryptic texts
- Second age trinkets

Broken urns can be found in the enemy-infested ruins of Ered Luin, Bree-land, Lone-lands and North Downs. No records are known From the Shire. You can also find them in the undead or spider infested barrows of the Barrow-downs, SW of Bree.
If you want to avoid such dangerous places, you can also look for woad-plants. These plants can be used for making a several blue dyes. But be aware: woad plants are not as abundant as broken urns, so you will only find one ore two plants on a spot. But if you like plant gathering, nothing stands in your way to become a botanist!

Ered Luin (see map above)
Broken urns seems to be a bit rare here, and the best places to look out for them are Emyn Hoedh and Kheledûl. You can also kill some evil dwarves and goblins, since they regularly drop scholar stuff they have found.

Bree-land (see both Barrow-donws maps below, and the Bree-land map above)
Like the tier 1 artifacts, Bree-land is also the best region for tier 2 artifacts: the broken urns. They can be found in ruins in Bree-land and also in several barrows of the Northern and Southern Barrow-Downs. The Barrows are rather dangerous at equal level, but the mobs you have to conquer will drop excellent stuff! Some barrows have a nice surprise, since they also contain some Antique vases, a tier 3 artifact that is rather uncommon in the Breeland region. You can find these vases in the bigger rooms of the barrows, usually guarded by a small boss.

Lone-lands (see map Tier 3, below)
Minas Eriol region (around [35.3S, 38.4W]

The North Downs (see map Tier 3, below)

Minas Vrûn region [12.0S, 51.6W]

Tier 3 – Expert: Antique Vase

Antique vases can be looted by scholars if they have at least Expert proficiency and - of course - a scholar's glass equipped. This third-tier node will give you three kind of raw materials to craft receipts:

- Faded Sindarin passages
- Torn craftsman's diaries
- Cracked dwarf

Antique vases can be found in ruins throughout The Lone-lands, The North Downsand Evendim In Bree-land they can be found in barrows in the Barrow-Downs (see maps above).

Bree-lands(see maps above)
In Bree-land antique vases can be found in the barrows of the Northern and Southern Barrow Downs. They are reported from Haud Taenthond, Haudh Methernil*, Haudh Nogbenn and The Barrow of Ringdor* in the northern Barrow Downs. These relatively small barrows are less dangerous than the big ones in the southern Barrow Downs.
The biggest barrows in the Southern Barrow Downs are the most dangerous ones and quite lethal if you enter them solo, at least at a low level. I found vases in The Great Barrow and Haufh Iarchith, both are instances. Two smaller barrows in the NE corner of the southern Barrow Downs has also antique vases: Goetham and Gwantham.
Take notice that you have to enter a barrow to find these vases, since they don't appear on your mini-map when you are above ground, tracking them. At 3 locations I found antique vases above the ground; they are all located near the big ruin of Ost Gorthad, in the SE corner of the map.

* reported by EternalLurker (see comments)

Lone-lands (see map below)
East of Weathertop, in ruins south and north along the road to the last bridge, you can find several locations with antique. All places are guarded by mobs and are not easy to reach when you are level 15-20. In Iorvinas you have to go into the dungeons to find some vases. Agamaur and a ruin in Harloeg are even more dangerous, and here you can find Forgotten Texts, which are the Tier 4 artifacts.

The North Downs (see map below)
In the North-downs all scholar artifacts are to be found in ruins. I haven't found any artifacts in enemy camps, like Dol Dinen. I skipped the remote Nan Wathren, since I don't expect to find any artifacts here on basis of the stated observation. Most ruins will contain antique vases and these places are guarded by enemies, of course. The only easy places to loot are the two ruins with Broken urns, NE of Threstlebridge. Curiously, I couldn't find any scholar artifact within one of the biggest ruin of Middle Earth, the enormous castle of Fornost. I entered this huge complex of walls and towers, and even the northern - instance - parts. But alas, I din't found anything but zillions of mobs...  However, they drop a lot of raw scholar materials, so they must have looted all the artifacts here.

Evendim
Evendim is rich in ruins and also rich in scholar artifacts. Almost every big ruin inhabited by enemy forces or aggressive animals - like wolves, bats and salamanders - contain at least 1 artifact. Most of them are antique vases, but a some (more dangerous) places you will find forgotten texts. Be aware of these texts, because they can stay a long time hidden in plain sight. When you reach almost the place where the text will be, it will appear like magic. Probably all these text are enchanted and hidden for the unaided eyes of strangers!

In the Map below you will see all the places I have visited in Evendim and wether you can find a scholar artifact or not. The two ruins east of Parth Aduial are actually in the Northdowns, adjacent to the border of Evendim. These ruins are named Glirost and Tham Lorn.

Tier 4 -  Artisan: Forgotten Text
Forgotten textscontains two types of raw material (tier 4):
- Fragment of Dúnedain Script
- Relic of Lothlórien
These ancient texts seem to be enchanted, since they stay hidden in sight, and they only appear when you stand close enough to see them. Fortunately, they can be seen in the mini-map (radar), when the Track Artifacts skill is activated. In heavy mob infested ruins, these texts can be a pain to find, since you have to fight your way through lots of mobs until you reach the right spot. It is always a rare sight to see the shimmering lectern with the old textbook appear when you stand close enough. And after a wild search it gives great satisfaction to extract the most wanted scholar materials - fragments of Dunedain Script and Relics of Lothlorien - of these texts.

Forgotten texts, can be found in 5 regions: in the easternmost parts of the Lone-lands, throughout the Trollshaws, Evendim and Angmar and only1 place in the Misty Mountains.

 .

Lone-lands (see map above)
Forgotten texts can be found in the eastern part of the Lone-lands. They are situated in places with heavy resistance, like the undead in Ost Haer and Nindor and the elite forces in Agamaur. I didn't found any artifacts in the instance area Garth Agarwen, so skip this place for artifact exploration.

Evendim (see map above)
Evendim is not very rich in Forgotten texts and I have found only 4 places. Surprisingly, the huge ruin town of Annúminas is relatively scarce in artifacts. I have only found 2 places near Minathranc, and when you loot them they will reappear on 2 other spots near that place. I have marked all the 4 places on the Annuminas map. Since there are so many Angmarin and Trolls, it is actually not worth it to venture forth in this very dangerous area. All mobs are around level 40 and are elite forces. The tombs in Men Erain - northeast of Annuminas - are a better place to look for these magical texts. I found three spots along the road. Two are located around the tomb Haud Arantar and one is south of Haud Valandur, in a small open tomb-ruin.All these spots are much easier to loot than the dangerous places in Annuminas. Another option is the salamander island Tyl Ruinen, although I could only found 1 spot there in the ruin of Tollobel. Salamanders can be a nuisance here, and since Forgotten text can be hidden for a while in plain sight - although they appear in the radar - it may be hard to get these texts. Consider it a challenge when you are of equal level!

Trollshaws
Trollshaws is the best region to find forgotten texts. However, most places where scholar artifacts are found, are infested with lots of monsters, like trolls and wights. Except Ost Durgonn, most places are very dangerous at level 35. So, my best advise is to loot them in a fellowship, or go back when you are some levels higher. After lvl 50+ it is an easy area. Thieves and elves may sneak - unseen - behind the trolls, snap the text, and flee away. But if the trolls are some levels higher then you, they will undoubtedly sniff you out. Even if you are in sylvan shadows...

Misty Mountains
Not worthy for any visit. Only 1 spot known, at the Bitter Stair near Helegrod. If the place is looted - near a stone column the text will appear on the opposite stone column.

Angmar
Despite the many ruins and old forgotten towns in Angmar, scholar artifacts are rare in this grim place.  I have checked Carn Dum, The Rift, Barad Gularan, Ram Duath and Ongbishuk, but all these places seems to be empty. Probably most texts and ancient vases are stolen or destroyed by the high amount of enemy forces which can be found in these areas. Almost all places are full of mobs, like Angmar priests, evil men, large trolls and countless orcs. Since the rewards by killing them are many, it's probably better to kill a lot of this evil spawn. If you are lucky they drop some stolen artifacts and some money too. The forgotten text and ancient vases I have found, are marked on the map below.
If you don't like killing a lot of evil humanoids, I advise you to search for ancient vases in Forochel. It is not such a harsh place as Angmar, and especially 1 location is easy to loot. Alas, there are not many places with ancient vases I know there, and these vases seems to be quiet rare in most of the zones and their regions
Many forgotten texts can be found in Trollshaws, but all places are heavily guarded by enemies, same as in Angmar. At least Trollshaws is not such a depressing place as Angmar, so if you wanna slay mobs with a blue sky and enlighted elven music, go to Eastern Trollshaws (see the map for locations).

Forgotten texts and ancient vases are rare in Angmar

Tier 5 – Master: Ancient Vase

Ancient Vases contain 4 types of raw scholar material of tier 5, and you need to be at last a Master to open these vases.
These types of raw materials can be found in ancient vases:
- Long-lost Second Age Text
- Torn Scholar’s Journal
- Undeciphered Moon-letter
- Worn Elf-carving

Ancient vases, can be found in ruins throughout The Misty Mountains, Forochel and Eregion.

Ancient vases at The Lonesome Stones - in Forochel - are easy to loot

Misty Mountains

Misty Mountains seems not a good place for scholar stuf. I only found 1 place with 2 spots of text: the ancient ruin of Gabilazan. All other places seems to be devoid of texts. Even in Goblin town or the stone houses of the giants - in Giant Halls - there are no scholar artifacts to be found. Hope somebody will find a new spot in this region. Tell me if you do!

Forochel
Ancient vases are a bit scarce in Forochel. Maybe some ruins are now blanketed by thick ice-layers and vanished until warmer times appear. I have found, until now 3 locations. Three are situated in ruins named Kibilzahar, The Lonesome Stones and The Ironspan. With some care Kibilzahar and especially The Lonesome Stones can be looted fairly easy. In both places there are only two spots where you can find ancient vases. Just kill some enemies and wait until they reappear. Kibilzahar is a small ruin and the vases will reappear at the same spots. The Lonesome stones are much bigger, so the 2 vases have 4 spots where they can appear. Luckily the place is fairly empty of enemies and it is the safest spot to loot you valuable The Ironspan however is heavily guarded by lots of Angmarin, so take care when you try to loot the vases at that place. Don't go there when you are several levels lower than the Angmarin at this place!

The ancient vases near Zigilzund are hidden by sight and you have to enter the Icereave Mines to find them. At first sight you only see 1 vase, but if you pull a lever downstairs a hidden passage will appear. In that passage 2 other vases can be found. The place is infested with dourhand dwarves and peikko-snowbeasts, but they drop a lot of loot. Don't go in if you are some levels lower as the mobs since they will surely overrun you! Come back when you are a higher level, or loot in a group of 2-3.

Eregion

Like Forochel, the ancient vases are also rare in Eregion. I have found until now only 3 places. First place to go are the ruins at Pembar, with lots of worms and half-orcs. You will find 2 spots with vases there. In the west I found 2 spots in Barad Morlas, another ruin with lots of half-orcs. You can combine both places with quests, especially Barad Morlas. South of Barad Morlas there is a small ruin with 2 other spots of ancient vases. Both spots are fairly easy to loot. If you circle around in Barad Morlas, you can kill half-orcs and their wolf-guards, do a lot of quests and looting at least 4 spots with ancient vases, until they reappear.
Curiously enough, I haven't found any vases in the well known ruins of  Tham Mirdain, like the School and the Library. Also the orc-camps near the Red Horn Pass (Thar Stag) and the Angmarin and Dunleding-camps in Emyn Naer don't contain any vases. So, like Misty Mountains and Forochel, the Ancient Vase is a rare scholar artifact indeed.

Tier 6 -  Supreme: Sage's Locker, Sage's Casket and Sage's Lockbox
There are 3 kinds of tier 6 artifacts: sage's lockers, caskets and lockboxes. They can contain up to 5 types of raw materials. The materials are:
- Etching of Moria
- Rune-carved Tablet
- Relic of Khazad-dûm
- Broken Dwarf-statue
- Tattered Khuzdul Parchment

Droprates
Although I haven't figure it out completely, here is a table with droprates of the 3 types of lockboxes you can find:

Item
Locker
Casket
Lockbox
Bright Lamp
0-1 (20%)
0-1 (20%)
0-2 (20%)
Broken Dwarf-statue
0-1 (50%)
1-3 (100%)
0-3 (90%)
Tattered Khuzdul Parchment
0-1 (25%)
1-2 (100%)
1-3 (100%)
Etching of Moria
1-3 (100%)
0-1 (25%)
0-1 (75%)
Relic of Khazad-dûm
1-3 (100%)
0-1 (90%)
0-1 (50%)
Rune-carved Tablet
1-3 (100%)
0-1 (50%)
0-2 (90%)

Read the table as follows: a Sage's lockbox has a 100% drop rate for at least 1 Tattered Khuzdul Parchment, although sometimes 2 or 3 can drop. A lockbox drops most of the time (90%), a broken dwarf statue (up to 3) and 1-2 rune-carved tablets (90%), Echtching of Moria-droprate is 75% and only 1 will drop; you have a 50% chance for 1 relic of Khazad-dum.

Sage's lockers, -caskets and -lockboxes can be found in places like Lothlorien, Moria, Enedwaithand Mirkwood. Sage's Lockers can be found in Moria and Mirkwood. Sage's Caskets can be found in the lower depths of Moria, starting in the Redhorn Lodes. Sage's Lockboxes can be found in Lothlorien, Mirkwood and Enedwaith.

Moria
There are lots of places to find Sage's caskets and Sage's lockers in the Mines of Moria.
As an elf, I don't this the depressing environment of narrow, dark and countless maze-like paths beneath the earth. I mapped all the places in Moria where I found artifacts, and below you see my final results. Print them out, or use a second screen like I do (they are easy to access these days at a 2nd hand shop).
The Moria maps I have used are the detailed real travel maps, from which you will see a small portion in your radar. The named locations are the points of interest which will appear as flagged objects on the radar. You see them also on the overview map as flags (when pressing the M-key). For you convenience I have marked the stables (purple dots) and on most maps also the stable-routes You only have to travel some part of a route, by foot or goat, and wind your way in the dark caverns and halls of Moria,

Sage's Lockers
Sage's lockers can be found in the upper levels of Moria: The Great Delving and Durin's Way, and in the sub-lower levels Silvertine Lodesand Zelem-Melek. They can also be found in the Waterworks.

Great Delving
When you enter Moria, you start in the Great Delving. At first sight Moria is an overwhelming place and the Great Delving seems pretty easy. Strange enough the starter areas are full of mazes and you are lost pretty easily. Since all dark caves are literally infested with swarms of orcs and goblins, a wrong turn can result in a great havoc and lots of frustration. Moreover, there are many places where you can drop in the endless abyss of Moria, so you are warned!
Sage lockers can be found in lots of places, and when you wait a bit they will respawn quickly. I have provided also the stable routes on the map, so when you are lost you have to go to the stable route and wind your way back to a safe place.
Moria - Great Delving. Yellow dots = sage's locker, yellow line = stable route (stables = purple)

Durin's Way
North of the Great Delving, when you pass the Dwarf-lords Gate, you enter (the zone) Durin's Way. The whole western (left of 'the cross' of Jazargund on the map) is rich in sage lockers, but you don't find them in the winding passage from the Chamber of Crossroads to the 21st Hall.
All the locations are guarded by orcs or other nasty critters. The garden is surprisingly empty of sage's lockers.

Durin's Way. Yellow dots = sage lockers, yellow line = stable routes (stables = purple)
The Fanged Pit
East of the cross of Jazargund there is a gigantic Cavern with small hills, peaks, platforms and lots of winged evil creatures. Despite the vastness of the Fanged Pit, there are no scholar artifacts to be found. I crossed all the paths, but didn't see any. So, as a scholar in search for artifacts you can skip this area.

Fanged Pit. Yellow dots = sage lockers, yellow line = stable routes (stables = purple)

Silvertine lodes
Silvertine lodes lies south of Deep Descent and can be considered as a sub-lower level. This zone contains some spots with Sage's lockers, but it is not a very rich place. I found 3 spots in the central part, near the spiral wooden platform of Menem-berej. The Old Silvertine City and the goblin infested caves south of Gamil Filik offers also some spots. If you desperately need some lockers, the upper levels of Moria are richer and more easier to loot.

Silvertine lodes: yellow dots = sage's lockers, yellow line = stable route

21-st Hall
South of the 21-st Hall is a big hall complex with the same dark brown tiles, called the Great Hall of Durin. You can enter it by the 21-Hall West Arch, and by following the stable route you wil find 3 spots of lockers. The hall has several sublevels connected with stairs. In total you can find 7 spots with lockers in the brown tiled halls. Two places are dangerous and heavily guarded by orcs, Bult-kar and gazata-ru. The other locations are not a very big problem, as long as you are the same level as the orcs in this zone.
If you follow the stableroute, you can go to the Wide Halls and entering the Zelem-Melek zone. This is a very huge zone, with a maze like structure with small hals and orc infested rooms. Zelem-melek is gradually changing in the Flaming depths-zone in the SE.

Zelem-Melek, 21-st Hall (north) and Great Hall of Durin (south)

Zelem-Melek Northern part
Zelem-Melek is a big hall complex with many separated small halls and orc infested areas. It has several Sage's lockers, but they are a bit scattered throughout Zelem-Melek. South of the Hall of Flowing Water this zone seems to be a bit empty, but this will change when you are entering the southern part of Zelem-Melek (see entry below). This part of Moria can be entered from the 21 Hall in the NE or the Great Delving in the West. In the far NE you will entering the Redhorn Lodes.
A curious gorge is running north-south and bordering Zelem-Melek from the Great Delving. You can follow this gorge right to the Flaming Depths. There is much ore to be found in this underway tunnel, but no scholar artifacts.

Zelem-Melek, northern part: yellow dots = sage's lockers, yellow line = stable route

Zelem-Melek Southern part
The South part of Zelem-Melek is much alike the north part with lots of Sage's lockers. All are concentrated in orc infested rooms, so be a bit prepared to hit and run if there are too much orcs attack you. Since there are many dead ends, its advisable to approach every room cautiously. This hall-like zone changes after you pass the Orc-Watch in the east, when you enter the big cavern of the Redhorn Lodes. This is a lower zone of Moria, with Sage's caskets.
In the south is the stable of Anazarmekhem, and at that place you enter the Flaming Depths, a dangerous lower zone of Mora, with Sage's caskets.

Zelem-Melek, southern part: yellow dots = sage's lockers, yellow line = stable route

The Waterworks
The Waterworks is one of the coolest places to be in the Mines of Moria. it is a world on its own, with strange quiet pools and interesting chambers to explore. For a lower level area it is not a very dangerous one, in most parts. The Globsnaga orc place - the red room  bordering the Chamber of Dark Waters - is one of the more dangerous places. An interesting place to explore is The Lost Palace with beautiful translucent spiders.
The Waterworks is a fun place to discover and you will find several scattered places with sage's lockers. Surprisingly, in this lowest level of Moria, there are no caskets to be found and you will find only sage's lockers. The western part, south of Narag-kheleb didn't contain any scholar artifacts. I checked all the places there, but couldn't find anything.

The Waterworks, southern part: yellow dots = sage's lockers, yellow line = stable route

Sage's Caskets
Sage's caskets can be found in the lower depths of the Mines of Moria, like the Redhorn Lodes and Flaming depths. The Waterworks is a beautiful area, but contains only Sage's Lockers. Nothing was found in the awful caves of the Foundation of Stone.

Nud-Melek
A big part of Nud-Melek is thegigantic Second Hall with huge stone columns, shaped like ancient trees. This area - the 2nd Hall - has 4 spots of sage's caskets, and you can circle it by emptying the caskets and slaying the numerous orcs and nasty big glowworms.
From Khurjezer to the First Hall I only found 3 locations and west of the 21 Hall, in the lava-rich stone-bridge area only 1 spot.
Don't go in the passage north of Khurjezer for scholar artifacts, since there are none to be found. This passage is a nuisance anyway, because after slaying countless and countless orcs you pass Balin's Camp and will encounter a non-passable roadblock, guarded by ... orcs! You have to fight the whole way back, since there isn't any passage to the 21st-Hall (although the map and mini-radar suggest it...).

Sage's caskets (blue dots) in Nud-melek. The yellow line it the stable route.

Redhorn-lodes
Redhorn lodes is a surprisingly pretty easy high level area to look for sage's caskets. The caskets are concentrated in the NW part of this zone, I didnt found any in the Eastern half and the southern part (infested with countlessspitting Grodborgs).

Sage's caskets (blue dots) in Redhorn Lodes. The yellow line it the stable route.

Flaming Deeps
The Flaming deeps is an interesting place to be, with lots of lava pools and heat-loving critters. There are several spots with sage's caskets to be found, most of them in the near vicinity of the stable route. If you are careful, they are not very difficult to loot, but this place seems to be a bit more dangerous then the Redhorn Lodes.

Sage's caskets (blue dots) in the Flaming Deeps. The yellow line is the stable route

Foundation of Stone
In this gruesome place, with indescribable horrors, totally none scholar artifacts where found.

Lothlorien
Of all zone in Middle Earth where I have searched for Sage's lockboxes, the golden wood of Lothlorien is the easiest and most relaxed place to be. You need to cross the Nimrodel, since these artifacts can only be found in the golden wood. Until now I have discovered five places: Cerin Nauth,  The Quiet Garden, Cerin Brethil, The Vineyards of Lorien and Lady's Rest. Nearly all these places give 3 easy to loot spots with Sage's lockboxes. There are hardly no enemies to attack you here - if you stay away from some - and it's a much more comfortable place to look for artifacts then the ugly halls of Moria. Although I realize that the hack-and-slash scholars may find it a bit to dull here (slashers: go to Mirkwood for artifacts). Anyway, I you circle Cerin Nauth,  The Quiet Garden and Cerin Brethil, you will have a lot of artifacts in no time. At the Vinyards of Lórien you can found 2 spots with boxes here. Reports of 5 places are only a false rumor. Anyway, the Vineyard is a bit remote, so if you don't have to do any quests here it is better and far more economic to circle the above mentioned glades.

Mirkwood
Compared to Enedwaith and especially the golden forest of Lothlorien, Mirkwood is a grim place to be. But if you are careful it's not such a pain as the numeral deep crevices of Moria. You have to venture far to reach the ruins with artifacts (Sage's lockboxes) and they seem to be concentrated in the orc and ghost infested ruins of the Ashenlades. I have marked six stony ruins where lots of lockboxes can be found. Most places have 3 lockboxes, and the two ruins at Sad Doldur contain a total of 6 boxes. If you circle around here, you will encounter 18 places with lockboxes, and this is one of the highest density places with scholar artifacts to be found in a small area. If you want to do some slayer-deed, like orc-slaying, or want to do some ruin discoveries, the Ashenlades is certainly the place to be!
I didn't found any other places with Sage lockboxes in other ruins, like the Mirk-eaves in the western part of Mirkwood, Emyn-lum and Taur-morvitch. Even the huge ruin complexes in Dol Guldur and Gathburz seems te be empty (probably all stolen by evil man). The tower of Minas Gil is also not worth a visit for artifacts, although you can slay a lot of sorcerers there (slayer-deed). Like all humanoids they will certainly drop some raw material of the stolen scholar artifacts. Note that the orc-camps with tents and wooden palisades(western part of Mirkwood) and the barrows at the Shrine of the Ancient One (far eastern Scuttledells) didn't contain any artifacts either.

Enedwaith
Not much is known of the scholar artifacts in this zone of Middle Earth. I have discovered4 regions with several spots of Sage's lockboxes.
In the north there seems to be only 2 places withlockboxes. The first place to enter is the deserters camp of Lhe Lhechu, in Forditith. A far better, but much more dangerous place is the giant ruin of Amon Min. It is heavily guarded by robbers, but it is an awarding place to loot: I have found 6 spots with lockboxes there. The King's Way Gate, NW of this great ruin was empty; I only found a regular wooden chest there.
In the south there are 2 major regions for Scholar artifacts. You can find quite a lot of Sage's lockboxes in the lich infested barrow downs of Lich bluff. Most locations here are west of the road, but you can also find some east of it. All the lockboxes are heavily guarded by numerous liches
In the giant hills of Thrors Thomb there are also some sage's lockboxes to be found, between the giants... These huge creatures are lvl 65 and they have a health of 20300 morale! So, it's a bit tricky here, unless you are level 75 or higher (then a very easy spot!). They are all located near Mafan-mudum. I didn't find anything in the north-eastern snowy dragon area or in the ancient dwarven library of Nár's Peak.

Tier 7 – Westfold: Banded Coffer

Banded Coffers can be found in Dunland, the Gap of Rohan, Nan Curunír and the Great River.
The coffers contain the following raw materials:

- Page of Gondorian Parchment (rare)
- Scraps of Weathered Dunlending Text (common)

Heavy banded coffers can drop the very valuable Cracked Rhi Helvarch Sigil, a great item to craft special legendary weapons and books.

The Great River - Thinglad
Some places at the Great Rover are surprisingly empty of enemies and a pleasure to look for banded coffers. You can find 3 near the ruin of Haldirith and 2 near the giant statue, called The Cuthstan. A far more dangerous area is the Limlight Gorge with gargantuan spiders and walking trees (huorns). The Fallen Tower is more or less easely to appoach, but all the other places with banded coffers are dangerous. Starting at the Fallen Tower, the scholar can do the Ancient Ruins of the Limlight deed here. For this deed you have to find very small ruins.  Two of these very small ruins - white fallen walls, pulsating when not discoverd - can by found by tracking artifacts: the tumbled and ancient elf-ruins are almost always accompanied by 1 banded coffer (although it can be empty if they are looted by another scholar). The other 3 places in the Limlight Gorge with small elf-ruins are the mysterious [27.0S, 69.0W], hallowed [27.4S, 70.4W] and engraved elf-ruins [27.0S, 71.2W]. I didn't find banded coffers at those places.

The orc-camps in the north (Thinglad) have also spots with banded coffers. I have found 5 spots at the camp of Hîs-urdan and 2 in Ûngund. Those in Ûngund were heavy banded coffers and one of them contained a very rare Cracked Rhi Helvarch Sigil. So be keen and loot always the heavy banded coffers first! You never know when another scholar will show up...

Three coffers can be found in the ghost infested Field of Celebrant. The neighbouring Eorlsmead Tower however was empty when I visited it. The big ruin complex of Ost Celebrant is full of banded coffers, but infested with many ghosts and brigands. I couldn't find anything in the Brownland camps.

Dunland
The North of Dunland seems to be full of banded coffers, even more then in the Great River area. Especially the wight infested Bonevales offers much for a scholar. I have found 10 locations with banded coffers! I noticed also some Indigo plants in this place, but didn't map them. Other good places in this part of Dunland are the dragon clan settlement (north and south) and the adjacent Rooks hut.

In the centre of Dunland lies the strange winged tower of Flam-cadlus. Its is heavely guarded by lvl 68 dunleding riders, but there are many rewards here! I have found 5 spots with normal banded coffers and 2 spots with heavy banded coffers (1 dropped a Cracked Rhi Helvarch Sigil). The other tower, Hen Turrau, lying SE of this tower, has 3 lightly guarded spots with banded coffers. One of them is of the heavy type, so it may drop a Cracked Rhi Sigil.

Other places in central Dunland give only 1 or 2 coffers, but the Tree of Tribute maybe an interesting spot. One of the coffers here can be a heavy one (special drop!). The warg panels, north of the Howling caverns - in Pren Gwydh - are also a good place for looting coffers, but beware all these lvl 67 wargs with their goblin trainers. If you are careful, this place can be looted by a solo caracter of lvl 65+.

To the southwest, Lhan Covarn (in the NW point of the Dunbog) is an interesting place. Four coffers can be found, but this place is literally swarmed with malevolent orcs. Don't go there if you are low level, or go in a group. However, at level 75+ it is an easy place to loot.

To the far south are the Withered Stones. This is an ancient ruin in a swamp, with lots of strange Dun Avanc (lvl 71): a kind of reptilian which looks like a small stegosaurus. Don't underestimate them, they are fierce creatures!

The Tal Methedras settlement, in the NE of Dunlaind doenst contain any banded coffers.

Gap of Rohan
In the Gap of Rohan I found 4 locations with banded coffers, all in the enemy infested settlement of Brôntrig. There are a lot of lvl 72-73 Draig-lûth Warriors here, so be careful! Otherwise this area is not interesting at all to search for banded coffers, although I didn't inspect the evil settlement of Wulf's cleft.

Nan Curunir
Nan Curunir is Saruman's place, with the forbidden Black tower of Orthanc permanently in sight. It is a gruesome and very malevolent zone, and not the place to be for gathering banded coffers. I only found one location, with 2 spots: in the Blackmarch Fort, which is literally swarming with lvl 75 Shak-Hai Archers, Warriors and Woodcutters. The name woodcutter sounds like a normal woodcutter, bit these beasts are Saruman's creatures, so Uruk-Hai. They have cut down the lovely forest here. I can imagine a better place for looting Banded coffers, like the Bonevales in NW Dunland!

Nevertheless, for the bold adventurer it is fun to steal artifacts right under the nose of Saruman. His tower is outside the wall guarded by lvl 75 warg-rides and half-orc sentries. Inside you will find - of course - a host of lvl 75 enemies, like Isenguard warriors, Isen Warg Riders, Shak-Hai Warriors, signature Shak-Hai Overseers and the elite 76692 morale War-Troll (immune to root and stun). Some humans can also be found here, a kind of sorceres called Apprentice of Saruman.

Outside the gate I found only 1 spot with a banded coffer, but inside is a ring of 10 or more coffers. Two are heavy banded coffers and may (not will...) contain a cracked rhi sigil.

The Gate is guarded by 2 arch-nemesis trolls, called Ufdragh and  Barashal. They are immune to stun and root. Both trolls are 751700 morale and extremely dangerous. Ride your horse and sprint through, in a straight line to the black tower of Orthanc! Hopefully they don't hit you with a devastating hit! They can do each 4044 Common damage with a critical hit, or 1333 normal shadow damage. Normally only 1 troll will hit you, but sometimes - that is a stated fact - two. If you run far enough, they will stop and retreat to their watchpost at the gate.

Inside you have only to avoid - or slay - the swarms of mobs there. Its pretty easy when you are lvl 84, since no one - except Ufdragh and  Barashal - will attack you. The only thing you have to be careful at, is the escape route. If you hit that place, you enter a one-way sewer tube to the outside and cannot go back. Anyway, have a lot of fun at Saruman's dwellings. Sadly enough, you cannot visit him to drink a cup of green tea. The door of the black tower is firmly closed...

To enter the inner circle you have to pass these nemesis-trolls

Tier 8 -  Eastemnet - Ornate Caches

Ornate caches can be found in East rohan and these wooden boxes contains 2 types of raw material:

- Scrap of Rohirric Text

- Piece of Sealed Wax.

Sometimes, especially in heavy ornate caches, you can find the very rare Tarnished Crest of Rohan. However, it is stated that this is a very rare drop from scholar artifacts, much rarer than the droprate from wood and ore...

The East Wall and The Wold have the best spots for scholar artifacts in Eastern Rohan, and they can be found in ruins (look careful at the map for these places!) and in orc camps. In all other regions in Eastern Rohan scholar stuff seems to be rare. Outside the Wold and the East Wall I have found only 4 places until now with ornate caches.  These places are located in orc camps or dungeons - even instances - , guarded by many orcs or undead.

Norcrofts and Entwash Vale

For the Norcrofts and Entwash Vale I have constructed two maps with the places I know, but maybe there are some more to find. However, none of  the locations in these areas has an easy access to loot the scholar artifacts. So, in conclusion I can advise you to concentrate your search in Eastern Rohan in the Wold, or - even better - south of the Argonath in the Eastwall region.

 .

The Wold
The Wold is at high level (80+) a pretty easy area to look for ornate caches.A fairly easy loot-spot with 4 cases can be found in a ruined tower, just south of Ost Celebranth, across the river and over the bridge (turn left when entering East Rohan).
Somewhat more dangerous areas are the ruins in the Seething Mire with lots of salamanders. There are some quests here, so you can combine your search for ornate chasts here.
The big orc-camp at Joshkni-Orda is another interesting spot for combining quests and looking for ornate chests. Together with the ruined tower in the north, it is the most rewarding spot for scholar artifacts in The Wold.
In the other orc-camps you will find only single ornate caches, but it is up to you if you want to loot these sparse trunks with some Rohirric texts. Killing orcs will also result in some drops of Rohirric texts. So, if you want to enlarge your scholar stuff, you have to choose the aggresive way here.

East Wall

Orc camp near the Argonath [49.5S, 47.6W]
Three chests can be found here, but the camp is heavily infested with ranged orcs (skirmishers) and close combat orcs (mordor orcs). They will be not a great problem, unless you run around with your horse. Stand still and kill them one for one, the ranged ones first, because they can do a lot of accumulated damage. If you are in a hurry, or don't want to kill a lot of orcs, you can skip this place and travel south. Most other places in The East Wall are much easier to loot then this one, with a meager reward of 3 chests...

Ruined tower, south of the Argonath [54.9S, 49.8W]
A relatively easy place to look for artifacts. Just some orcs, who can be easily subdued. The tower can be seen east of the road, but at first sight the radar will show you nothing. Just ride somewhat closer and you will discover 2-3 ornate chests around the old walls of the tower .

Ruins near Tol Brandir [59.0S, 47.5]
Just before the Rauros and with a beautiful view of Tol Brandir, there is a ruin with some orcs and three ornate chests. Its an easy spot to loot some 3-6 Rohirric texts.

Road to Amon Hen and Hissing Pit
Along the road to Amon Hen, near the Hissing Pit,  there are 6 ornate chests. Two can be found at 58.0S, 50.4W and 58.0S, 50.4W. It is a quiet place with some scattered orcs which can be easily avoided. Four in a row can be found near the rock wall of 58.4S, 50.2W and two near the ruined tower of 58.8S, 49.9W. All these chests are a relatively easy loot for a shrewd scholar.

Amon Hen
Somewhat more difficult are the ruins of Amon Hen, just at the top of the stairs. I have found 4 chests, all around a stair to the top of Amon Hen, near 61.2S, 46.6W. One can even be found at the kings chair, at the highest point of Amon Hen. Sitting in the chair you will have a beautiful view into the lands to come...

Damage with an edge - Damage types

When you start to use a weapon, the damage will be of the 'normal' type. This means that it will nog give you extra bonus, just regular damage. But some weapons, or weapons which are enchanted with a specific scroll, give extre damage to special creatyre types. There are 5 kinds of damage-type which can be inflicted by a weapon:

Damage types:
1. Ancient Dwarf: against dragons, reptiles, amfibians and worms
2. Beleriand: spiders and insects, but also half-orcs, morroval, nameless, etc.
3. Fire: against living plantlike creatures, slugs, most wolves, trolls and darkwater spirits

4. Light: against orc-kind humanoids: goblins, orcs, uruks, trolls, but also spiders. NB: cries-skills are also very effective against orcs, goblins and uruks.
5. Westernesse: undeads

Ettenmoors
For Ettenmoors extra damage against a monster player - a creep - can be effective.
You will encounter the following monster-player types in Etten:
1. Reaver: orc, vulnerable for Light
2. Defiler: orc, vulnerable for Light
3. Weaver: spider, vulnerable for Light and Beleriant
4. Blackarrow: uruk, vulnerable for Light
5. Warleader: uruk, vulnerable for Light
6. Stalker: warg (wolf-type), vulnerable for Fire

In conclusion, light is effective against 5 of the six monster types, so it is the most important type of damage which you can do in Ettenmoors. Moreover, orcs and uruks are vulnarable for cries, sou use cry-base spells a lot! Loremasters and Runkeepers can use light base spells, or fire base spells. Hunters can shoot arrows which give light damage. You need light oils for that, which can be produced by a loremaster.

Damage type and creaturesIf you want which type of creature is vulnarable against a special kind of damage, you need a loremaster. With the help of the Knowledge of the Lore-master skill, the loremaster can determine which type of damage is most effective against specific creature types.

How to become a woodworker

The Woodworker profession

If you like making bows and wooden staffs, maybe the Woodworker profession is something for you.Woodworker is a crafting profession, so to become a proper woodworker you have to enlist at a crafter.

I will guide you through the first steps of a woodworker, just follow the step-numbers and the accompanying pictures.

If you know all this, visit the advance site of this blog, about finding wood types and wood lore in Middle Earth. Follow this link:
http://elannah.blogspot.nl/2013/01/wood-and-where-to-farm-it.html

Step 0. Know the crafting button
Okay, this is easy, click on the anvil button and you know enough

Step 1. Going to a crafting place
In the Shire a nice crafting place can be found just opposite of the stable in Michel Delving. This place is situated in the most southwestern corner of the Shire. You can also travel to Michel Delving by horse from the stables at Celondim and Thorins Place in Ered Luin and the stable at the West Bree gate in Bree-land. Of course, you can start your career anywhere, but we will start in Michel Delving. Why? Simple because I like this place a lot! There is a trainers house nearby, at the tower is a bank and there is also an Auction Hall.

Woodworker step 1: going to a crafting place
Step 2. Speaking with the Mistress/Master of Apprentices
At the crafting place of Michel Delving you will find two persons concerning your craft. The Mistress of Apprentices is the first to talk to. She will give you the opprtunity to learn the woodworker profession. There is also a Master of Crafting Guilds, Dob Proudfoot. You can enlist to the woodworkers guild later on, at a higher level. Why, well they will give you the best crafting-receipts when you becoming a better woodworker.

Step 2: Enlist at the Mistress of Apprentices
Step 3. Enlist
To become a Woodworker, you must choose a crafting Vocation. Asking the Mistress of Apprentices you will get 7 choices. Choose to learn the Woodsman Craft Vocation.

Step 4.Train
After choosing the woodsman craft vocation, you have to hit the Train button. You can also read a short description about what a woodsman is. You will learn the following crafting skills: Woodworker, Forester and Farmer. If you only need to make bows, staffs and other wooden material - like musical instruments - you don't need the Farmer profession.  But, you can not swap farming with another craft, so probably the Farmer will be an inactive craft for you. It can become handy to make tobacco and beer, however. Or to process flowers, vegetables or fruit. If you have an other adventurer in Lotro who want to become a cook, the Farmer profession will be even invaluable! Although it is a bit boring, all that sowing and ploughin..

Step 5. Doing Introductory Quests
After choosing woodman, you get the opportunity to learn the basics of crafting. Choose at least Introduction to Forestry and Woodworking. Farming is not necessary, but if you insist, you can always do this one too.

Step 6. Check your Inventory
Hitting the I-key will open your bags (I for Inventory). After choosing your crafts and the introductory quests, you will find the following in your bags:
1. A Woodsman Guide (open it by clicking and read it carefully)
2. A crate with materials: click it and you get wood and other crafting stuff to learn the basics
3. An Foresters Axe (to hack wood in the fields. However, it is an inferior one, which means that it will break sooner than later...)
4. A Woodworking Tool (to process wood on a workbench)

Step 7. Get better gear
It is strongly advisable to go to the Supplier and buy a better axe and woodworking tools. Theinferior axe and saw you got for free, need a lot of repair. So buy immediately a better one at a supplier. If your level is higher you can even buy better tools. Just ask someone to make them for you - an armorer can - or look on the lists of the Auction Hall to buy a proper tool. You can also buy fore some Turbine Points a very good tool!

Step 8. Start your quests
Go to the Novice Woodworker (Belba Bracegirdle) and talk to her or him. You will get a quest and you can read a lot by clicking on the appropriate blue question rings.

Step 9B. Go to the workbench and start crafting

Step 9B. Choose something to make: as a Woodworker
By clicking on the workbench or opening you crafting panel (click the round anvil icon, on the icon bar, left-under in your screen). It will open a list, click on the +/- keys to drop down the possibilities. Try to make a Rowan Bow. You will Need to make 1 Bowstaff, and after that you have to make a Rowan Bow. By choosing the right products, by clicking them, and hitting the [make] button, all will be self-explanatory.

Step 9C. Make treated Rowan
The most simple wood type you can process as an Apprentice Woodworker and Forester is Rowan Wood. As a Forester you can make Treated Rowan Planks. To do this, you need two components: (1) Logs of Rowan Wood and (2) a Lump of Wax. The Lump of Wax can be bought at a Novice Woodworker or a Supplier. look at the titles of the people who are hanging around at the crafting place. You can read what to need in the crafting panel, for example Rowan Planks in the Wood-section of the Apprentice Section.
You will start as an Apprentice, which is also known as a Tier 1 Woodworker/Forester. You can advance to tier 2 - like leveling - by processing lots of woods or hides (hides can be farmed by shooting bears, boars and wolves). For evey thing you make you get crafting XP (experience) and also XP as a character. In the panel of woodworker you can see that you will need 200 XP points to advance to tier 2. You get 8 points for each Logs of Rowan Wood you will turn into a Treated Rowan Plank. After making the planks, you can turn the planks into a Rowan Bowstaff. As soon if you have a Bowstaff, you can turn that component in a bow. If you are a hunter, you are lucky, since the bow you have made is mostly better that the one you acquired for free.

Step 10. Search for Wood
As a woodworker you need wood. To find it easily, hit the Track Wood skill. It will be automatically placed in your skill bar when you got the woodsman craft profession. As soon as you activate this skill, a white dotted line will appear around the skill icon. After the track wood skill is activated, the only thing you have to do is walking around and watch your round mini-map (or radar). As soon as you see a blue arrow appear at the edge of the radar, you have found some wood. Point your mouse pointer on the blue arrow and you will read what kind of wood you have found (in the distance) with your tracking skill. If you come nearer, a green shield will appear. You also see the distance in m (meters) until you reach the wood spot. Be aware of the red dots around it: this could be an enemy who is going to attack you when you are trying to acquire the wood you have found.

Step 11. Hack the Wood
Farm the wood by right clicking on the wood. By hitting the 'N' key, you will see the names of the wood - and also of mobs and other things - from a distance. The N key dictated the Names-off and Names-on in the game, if it doesn't work: change the settings in the Options Panel. I can strongly advise you to turn names on!

Sometimes you cannot harvest the wood. There are only 2 reasons when this happens: if you get the message that you don't have the proper training for it, forget it. You are too low in training to acquire the wood type you found. For example Ash in Bree-land at Tier 1. First you have to acquire Tier 2 (= level 2 in Forestry). You can level by processing wood on a workbench into planks.
After you have reached a new tier, you can hack a higher type of wood  For example: in the Shire after Rowan (tier 1) will come Ash (tier 2), the next higher wood type

Oh, I nearly forgot. The other reason is, that you have forgotten to equip your axe. Just click on it in your Inventory. You can also drag the axe into one of your skill bars, and then clicking on that tool. Remember to click on your woodworking tools when processing the wood on a workbench.Well, you know what you are up to in the coming days.  Look for wood in the fields and forests, process it to planks on a workbench, and ... have fun!

Ore in Lotro, and where to find it

There are many ores to be found in Lotro's Middle earth. In this section I will discuss the types of ore, organized by Tiers, and - of course - where to find them in the huge world.

Ores can be found everywhere in Middle Earth and the type of ore you will find is dependedon a specific region within an area which you are visiting. In each area of Middle Earth [hit the M-key and you will see a map of the area, and the name] there are several ore type to be found.

To localize and mine ore deposits, you need the prospector crafting skill. If you are a tinker, weaponsmith, armourer or explore, you can track and mine ores. Alas, cooks, scholars, woodworkers and yeoman's cannot mine or track ores. They will see the ore deposits, but are unable to mine and process it.

A normal ore deposit yield 1-3 ore chunks, while rich ore deposits will yield 4-6 chunks. These rich ore deposits will also drop - on an irregular basis - gems, dye products and on the higher ties also very rare byproducts as a mithril flake, a cracked Rhi sigil or a Tarnished Crest of Rohan.

An overview for the starter

In the table below you will find all the ore types which you can find in Lotro's Middle Earth. They are organized in Tiers. Tiers are a kind of processing levels, to be acquired by processing ore into ingots, which you can do at a forge (like a smithy). You will notice that each tier can be found in specific regions of specific areas. So, copper can be found in all of the starter areas, but for ancient iron you have to venture forth into the more dangerous areas.

Byproducts
While mining ore deposits, there is a chance that you will find also a byproduct, like some base materials for making dyes or precious stones like agates, opals and sapphires. The best chance to find such byproducts will give you the rich ore deposits, or in the case or rich iron, the bountiful deposits. In the table below you will find an overview of byproducts per tier and ore type.

Where to find ore in Lotro
This is the main section of my article, and it will discuss where to find all these different kind of ores.

Tips
  • Ore nodes are not random, they spawn near the same places. So use the maps!
  • Remember to mine every ore node of the same level. After harvesting everything, it can respawn different types of ore of that level. So at tier 4 it can be platinum or dwarf-iron, at tier 5 ancient iron or ancient silver, etc.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

I haven't complete the maps of ore-nodes until now. I expect to work on them in april 2013.

In the mean time, you can find some example maps - derived from the Allakhazam Lotro web-site. However, these maps are not so accurate and in some cases - due to updates and node-type changes - even not true at all. If you find another type of ore, from a lower or higher tier, use the Tier-tables above. For example, if you the tin locations in Bree-land are of a higher Tier, the are replace by silver or barrow-iron ore type.

Tin & Copper ore

Barrow-iron ore

Silver ore

Gold ore

Rich-iron ore

 Platinum ore
  • Trollshaws, scattered, like 1 vs 4 distribution (platinum vs. dwarf-iron). So it is correct to assume that platinum is a rare ore type.
  • Misty Mountains has platinum ore too (west side).
  • Platinum in Evendim along the whole west shore of the lake.
  • Platinum in Angmar, scattered, like 1 vs 4 distribution. So platinum is the rare ore type.

Scholar in Lotro: making dye

Making dyes in Lotro

Most scholars are looking for artifacts, so they have to search in ruins and - mostly - have to kill a lot of evil creatures or man. This kind of scholar specialization can be called an archeologist. If you want that way, click on this link!

If you don't like such an aggressive way to become a scholar, and you are more of the docile type, you can always become a gardener or a botanist. Why? because these specializations are both interesting to make - and sell (!) colorful dyes.

Making dyes

An alternative way to level your proficiency as a scholar, is making dyes. This can be done by looking for rare plant-species (the way of the botanist) or making dye ingredients by harvesting crops on a farm field (the way of the gardener). Both ways are explained on a separate page.

The way of the Gardener

For the gardener his or her job is easy, but tedious and cumbersome, You have to grow lots of flowerbeds, as a farmer. Moreover, you need some luck because the ingredients are critical drop-offs of you regular flower harvest, so you have to do a lot of work to make a specific dye. Patience is the word of the Gardener...

Tier 2 - Harvesting Iris roots
At tier 2 the scholar-gardener can make grey dye by harvesting Iris roots. As a farmer you can gather these roots from Iris Fields. You need the Iris Field Recipe to make flower fields with Iris. A critical success in harvesting will result in a Well-tended Iris Field, and these fields produce the Iris roots. From these roots you can make grey dye. Well trained farmers at tier 7 (Westfold) can also harvest Iris roots from a Wild Flower Field (see below).
Iris, flower

Iris, roots

Tier 3 - Harvesting Bluebottle petals and Juicy Blackberries.
At tier 3 the scholar-gardener can make two types of dye: turquoise dye from bluebottle petals and violet dye from juicy blackberries. You can gather Bluebottle petals from Bluebottle Fields, but only after a critical success. The same hold true for Juicy blackberry, which can be harvested with a critical success from a Blackberry Field (producing a Well tended Blackberry Field and a random drop of a Juicy Blackberry).
Well trained farmers at tier 7 (Westfold) can also harvest Bluebottle petals from a Wild Flower Field (see below).
Bluebottle (Centaurea cyaneus)
Blackberries (Rubus fruticosus)

Tier 4 - Harvesting Amaranth petals, Onion skins and Lily-of-theValley leaves.
At tier 4 the scholar-gardener can make 3 types of dye:
  1. Burgundy dye (a brown-red color)  from Amaranth petals, these can be harvested from a Amaranth Field (critical success from a well tended field)
  2. Dark green dye from Onion skins, these can be harvested from a Green Onion Field (critical success)
  3. Forest green dye, which is a mixture from Onion skins and Lily-of-the-Valley leaves. TheseLily-leaves can be harvested from a Lily-of-the-Valley Field (critical success)
Well trained farmers at tier 7 (Westfold) can also harvest Amaranth petals and Lily-of-the-Valley leaves from a Wild Flower Field (see below).

Amaranthus (Amaranthus), flowers

Lily-of-the-Valley (Convallaria majalis)

Tier 5 - Harvesting Juicy Strawberries and Bloodwort roots.
At tier 5 the scholar-gardener can make 2 types of dye:
  1. Red dye from Juicy Strawberry, these can be harvested from a Strawberry Field (critical success from a well tended field)
  2. Orange dye from Bloodwort Roots, these can be harvested from a Bloodwort Field (critical success)
Well trained farmers at tier 7 (Westfold) can also harvest Bloodwort Roots from a Wild Flower Field (see below).

Bloodwort (Sanguisorba officinalis)
Bloodwort roots (dried)

Tier 6 - Harvesting Amarant petals and Juicy Strawberries.
At tier 6 the scholar-gardener can make 1 type of dye, the Rose dye. It can be produced from a mix of a fruit - a Juicy Strawberry - and a flower, the petal of an Amaranth. In Tier 5 is described how these plants can be harvested.

Tier 7: The Wild Flower Field: producing all kinds of flowers

If you wanna make a Wild Flower Field, it requires the proper recipe and also a Superior Vegetable Farmland. Such a superior farmland can be found in the following regions:
  • The Shire: at Hobbiton-Bywater [30.5S, 70.6W]
  • Bree-land near Bree West Gate [29.3S, 52.2W]
  • Dunland: Galtrev [79.6S, 16.2W]
  • Lothlórien: The Vinyards of Lórien [19.0S, 63.9W]
  • East Rohan: Eaworth in the Entwash Vale [47.2S, 63.9W] and Snowbourn in Sutcrofts [61.4S, 62.4W]
NB.: to be able to use Superior Farmlands for Artisan and above recipes, you must complete two quests and be granted Superior Farmland Access. When you have completed the first tier of the Expert Farmer tier, visit any Novice Farmhand.

Wild Flower Fields produce all kinds of crops, suitable to make the required dyes. If you have a critical succes, it will produce a Well Tended Wild Flower Field. The estimated production rates of both fields (critical success between brackets) are given below:

Amaranth Petal   20 (37)%      Juicy Elderberry          22 (42)%
Bloodwort Root   11 (53)%      Lily-of-the-Valley Leaf 27 (74)%
Bluebottle Petal    0 (63)%      Saffron Thread             24 (42)%
Indigo Plant         53 (74)%      Woad Plant                  73(100)%
Iris Root               18 (37)%      Yarrow Root               100(100)%

The way of the Botanist

The botanist is the plant gatherer and is always searching for rare plants in Middle Earth. It is not a very complicating job, because you have to know only three species of plants. These are Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Woad (Isatis tinctoria) and the Indigo plant (Indigofera tinctoria). The trick of this specialization is to know the areas where these plants are growing. Of course, it is not an easy way to locate them, but if you have found their habitats, you can gather as many if you like. of course, after gathering these rare plants, you have to wait until they are regrown. After some time they will emerge onroughly the same spots, so the only thing you have to do is to remember the regions where plants for dyes are growing.
Curiosity and exploring are the words of the Botanist.

Yarrow root
The real Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
At tier 1 you can make gold dye (a kind of yellow color, not gold alas) from Yarrow Roots. These plants can be found in the Shire (some) and in Bree-land (several). I will give you the map of Bree-land for the locations. Don't bother the Shire, because it is a rare plant in that region.

Yarrow root in Bree-land

Woad plant
The real Woad plant (Isatis tinctoria)
At tier3 you can make a navy blue dye from the Woad plant. This plants grows in the Lone-lands and the North-downs. Some can even be found in north-eastern Bree-land, at the shores of the big lake Nen Harn.
Woad plants in North-Downs
Woad plants in Lone-lands

Indigo plant
The real Indigo plant (Indigovera tinctoria)
At tier 4 you can make a dark blue dye, called Indigo, from the Indigo plant. This plant can be found in several regions. Most botanists collect them from Trollshaws and Eregion, but the Indigo-plants are reported from Evendim, Enedwaith and Rohan also.

Indigo plants in Trollshaws
Indigo plants in Eregion

Combining the Botanist and the Gardener

The following dyes can be made only by combining the flower ingredients of the gardener and the collected herbs from the botanist. These dyes are:
  • Evendim blue dye, at tier 4. By combining the Indigo plant & Bluebottle petals
  • Sea blue dye, at tier 5: combining the Woad plant & Bluebottle petals
  • Ered Luin blue dye, at tier 5: combining  the Indigo plant Juicy Elderberries
  • Yellow dye, at tier 6: combining Yarrow root & Saffron thread. The Saffron threads is - of course - a critical result from a Saffron Field.
